Editing Passwords

<div class="IPBDescription">Unable to edit stored passwords</div>When I open a stored password and hit the edit button, I am no longer able to directly edit the password itself. When I click on the password field, my only option is to "copy" the existing password. I've checked for a relevant setting in Preferences but kind find anything there. This "feature" makes it impossible to manually change a password when I, for example, want to manually change a password in a Service like Skype, say, or mobile me. Seems I have to now delete the existing password and start over.

I know that 1Password will automatically update my login if I change a password but that is not the use case I am trying to figure out.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Michael

I am sorry that you are having this problem, Michael.

Are you editing the login? Normally, "Copy" is the only option when viewing a login. To edit a login please either click the "Edit" button at the bottom of the main 1Password for Mac window or select "Edit Selected Item" from the Edit menu.

If this is not your situation and you still cannot edit a password, it sounds like your 1Password for Mac installation may be damaged. To resolve this:

    1. Download 1Password for Mac from our web site:

    http://agilewebsolutions.com/downloads

Click on the "Download Now" button under "1Password 3"

    2. Quit your web browser and 1Password, if it's running

    3. Open your Applications folder and drag 1Password to the Trash

    4. Install the new copy of 1Password you just downloaded

    5. Run 1Password and then your web browser

Your information is stored in a data file separate from the application, so it will not be harmed by this procedure.

I hope that helps. Please let me know.

    Thanks!

I'm glad this is the default behaviour in 1Password, but it can sure be a pain when I'm trying to add/change things. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

While it can be troublesome at times, the added security has surely prevented me from accidentally editing/deleting passwords and other information in the past.

Quick question, though: I am aware that 1Password doesn't decrypt this data "until it is needed," but what exactly is the trigger? Is it decrypted when I make a selection from my list of items on the left (e.g. websites, credit cards, etc.) or are individual fields decrypted one at a time as they are copied to the clipboard -- for example an account password, which remains obscured even after the account itself is selected to be viewed?

Nope, that is not the use case I'm describing. I'm trying to edit an actual standalone password itself, not a password embedded in a log in. In other words, I have lots of stored passwords that were generated at various times for various reasons. I want to be able to edit them manually. However, when I hit the edit button when I've got a standalone password selected, I still can't edit the password itself. I can edit it's name, put a tag on it, etc., but can't change the password. Only option is to copy it.

My work around is to simply delete that password and start over.

    I hope this is clearer.

    Thanks,

    Michael

Ah! The Generated Passwords section (Preferences > General > DIsplay in Sidebar > Generated Passwords) cannot be edited. Think of it more as a "history" which is there as a safety net. I posted a bit more about this in another thread.

    I hope that helps.
