Feature request for search
<div class="IPBDescription">Wildcards, please</div>Hey team,
First off, let me thank you for your great application. I use and love 1Password every day..
So here's my problem/request;
I probably have several hundred servers in there, and sometimes I need several logins in rapid succession.
Real life example: Let's say I need to log into four servers;
server1.serv1.prod
server2.serv1.prod
server3.serv1.prod
server1.serv2.prod
but I also have
server1.serv1.stage
server2.serv1.stage
server3.serv1.stage
server1.serv2.stage
Searching for "prod" might work, but I also have
backend.prod
frontend.prod
whatever.prod
If, however, I could search for server*.serv*.prod I could get exactly what I need.
Now, that was just a dumbed down life example that affects me directly, but I'm sure you and me both can think of a lot of reasons for having wildcards in search.
I hope you'll take this request into consideration, as I'm sure it would be useful to a lot of people.

Hi, Daniel, and welcome to the forums! That sounds like a great idea, and I'll pass it on to the team. Until such a feature is implemented, I would suggest using tags like "server", "prod", and "stage" so that you can easily search generically.
Thanks for the feedback!Flag 0 -
Yes, smart folders would be a way to do it, however the sheer amount of folders I would have to make and maintain makes it a rather daunting task. I currently have over 700 log-ins saved in 1password, not counting websites, and I know I'm not the only one. Keeping smart folders up to date matching any future searches I *might* need, with that many log-ins isn't something I see as feasible to do.Flag 0

I understand it's not the same thing. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_sadsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-(' /> I was just trying to offer a helpful solution within the constraints of the present state of search. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
This is still on our radar for possible inclusion in a future release.Flag 0 -

I am happy to announce that wildcard search will be included in 3.5.8.BETA-5.
It will only apply to title, location, username, and password scopes, but I think that is enough to still be useful.

Oh yeah, I have no doubt that it'll be very very useful! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' /> Definitely looking forward to that beta!
Thank you guys for the great support I've seen you give your product, and for listening to your customers. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />Flag 0 -

Daniel,
On behalf of everyone here, including the amazing Chad (I say that because he's really been squashing some bugs of late), you're very welcome! We're 1Password users ourselves, so we want the best experience too, but we don't always think of everything, so that's why we love hearing from our users, like yourself, to give us ideas for what we can improve.
Keep the feedback coming, we really appreciate it!Flag 0 -
Hey guys,
So, I'm currently on 3.6.0-beta-2, and I still can't see any way to do a wildcard search. Am I doing something wrong? Or did something just happen in the development to put this feature on hold for now?
Keep up the great workFlag 0 -
Hi Daniel,
I've just tested this in 3.6.0.Beta-2 and wildcard searching is working within 1Password itself, using the * character as the wildcard.
For example, I searched for *gmail.com and got any items that had Titles / Locations / Usernames or Passwords ending in gmail.com. I then searched for *helm* and got all items containing helm somewhere in the same fields.
Hope that helps,

That's very very strange. Am I missing a setting or something? I've tried asking two others in the office to do the same thing, none of us can get wildcards to work.

I get the same behavior you're seeing when I search everything, but if I search "Common" then I see the expected results. We'll get this fixed. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />Flag 0 -
Daniel,
Remember to add an ending * if you're wanting to search for something anywhere in the item, for example *gmail won't find yourname@gmail.com because it's looking for something ending in just gmail, but *gmail* will find gmail anywhere in string.
Hope that makes sense,

Thanks to both of you. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />
Like Jamie said, it seems to be related to searching in "Everything", and thanks for the information about * on both ends, Stu.
Just to be clear, I tried with *gmail* in "Everything" and got nothing, but plenty of results in Common.
Have a nice day.Flag 0 -
