Tag problems

<div class="IPBDescription">Feature requests</div>It is possible to bulk-tag items by dragging a selected number of items to an existing tag in the left sidebar, but (as far as I am aware) this is not mentioned anywhere in the documentation (I only learned this trick through a forum thread).

To effectively use tags, however, there are a few important things missing:

1. It must be possible to also remove a tag from a set of items (i.e do it on a collection rather than one-by-one). I am not aware of any trick to do that now. I tried to drag and then hold the option or command or shift key, but it won't make any difference. (One can of course completely remove all tags by dragging to the tag-folder named Untagged, but that is not what we want -- we want to remove ONE tag on a number of items.)

2. Smart folder can only match tags that CONTAINS a string. What we need is a way to also choose: IS, IS NOT (for individual tags, not the entire tag vector of course). Without this feature, it is not possible to search all items that have a certain tag but not a certain other tag.

    Sorry you missed it: http://help.agile.ws/1Password3/tags.html

    1. It must be possible to also remove a tag from a set of items (i.e do it on a collection rather than one-by-one). I am not aware of any trick to do that now. Yep. This one will likely have to wait a while, but it's an inconvenience we're aware of. Just so you know, if you're removing a tag from ALL items with that tag, you can easily do that just by deleting the tag itself. However, to remove a single tag from a specific set of items is not yet possible, as you noticed.

Right again. This one we have filed an issue for already.

    Thanks for the feedback, Harald!
  • Thanks for the good response!

As for the reason I missed the help page on the issue of tagging items, it is easy to explain:

In the case of documentation "1Password Help" from the help menu, there is no way to search the documentation to find the page you pointed at. As far as I have been able to find out, the ONLY way of reaching that info is to: sequentially go through all sections in the left panel and search for "tag", which occurs for the section "Features", and on that page there are two occurrences of the word, of which one is blue, which indicates it is clickable, and that one is (as far as I know) the only way of reaching ".../tags.html". Very easy to miss.

Generally, I much prefer documentation in the form of a PDF (with extensive bookmarks and a TOC), since that makes it easily searchable, and for any page it is easy to see its context. It also makes it easier to grasp how much documentation there is, what is covered, what I have read, and what I have skipped.

I hope you understand I was sincerely apologizing. We definitely have some work to do, but one of the things I've done recently is to simplify the docs to combine the Features and Tutorials sections, since most of the "Features" were just tutorials about new features. In the online docs, you can now find many great tips and walkthroughs in the Tutorials section. We do still have work to go though.

This is actually a project that I've been working on lately. We're going to be making a PDF manual available as well (hopefully) soon. I'm attaching the current progress, and there's just a few more things to touch up. The Knowledgebase and FAQs have been purposefully excluded for now, though they are still accessible online. The FAQ section just needs to be reworked to fit well in a PDF manual. Anyway, without further ado, here's the current PDF manual for 1Password 3.
  • Thanks for the response and tips, and that my ideas were well taken. Nice to hear that you are already working along those lines.

The PDF looks really good! Lots of bookmarks and clickable links. First time I've seen a PDF manual produced by Prince; it does obviously produce high quality PDFs. I have myself mostly used FrameMaker to produce manuals etcetera.

On an important thing related to tags: Only today I was made aware of the fact that 1Password for iPhone does NOT support tags!! I started to investigate 1Password for Mac with the clear intention of also using 1Password on my iPhone. I have no folders at all, since tags are much better and more flexible (an item can be a member of more than one tag category), but having a couple of hundred items on the iPhone with no such categories is going to be a real pain! That is something you REALLY need to address!

Prince helps us create quality PDFs. Trust me, we put tons of work into getting the PDF to work as well as it does with the links, page order, bookmarks, outline, etc. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' /> But yes, Prince did give us a great starting point.

The iPhone version will be updated with features from the Mac version gradually, but I'm not sure where tags fit in to the process. We'll be working as hard as ever on the iPhone app this year to make it the greatest it can be!
