difference between one's vault and Folders

Hello all,
I haven't had a need to chime in here lately but now I'm a bit perplexed about something.
What is the difference between one's "Vault" and one's "Folders"?
I currently have 120 logins in my Vault plus a few other items in accounts, identities, etc. Then I have 150 items in my folders, most, but not all are also in my Vault. For example, while at work this morning (last night for most of you all) I added several new logins via my iPad and now at home they are in my Folders but NOT my Vault.
So this is why I'm confused.
I sync via Dropbox and on Snow Leopard and the latest beta build of 1PW.
I'm about to go to bed, so I may not get the reply for a few hours, but thanks nonetheless.
