more control over special characters

i would really love an option in the "strong pw generator" to manipulate the use of special characters. since i would like to use things which are accessible through shift+NUMBER i do NOT like thinks like alt+NUMBER (for examlbe [] or {} )

please build in an option, where i can exclude such special characters!

many many thanks in advance! i fucking LOVE 1pw <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' /> thx thx thx

  • Servus brain_death - I guess on your keyboard (Austrian/German layout) you need to press alt+5 to get "[". On my keyboard I just press "[" - which has its own key where you have the "ü" on your keyboard. If I press alt+5 I get "∞". So if 1Password would consider implementing a feature like you requested, it would be difficult to make it right for everyone.

But why are you typing your password anyway? I guess if you're typing it it can't be very long and therefore not that safe. There are many ways avoiding to type a password:

    1. on the web login page, right click and choses "Fill xxx" from your 1Password popup menu

    2. double click the login record in your 1Password app (this will open the web page and fill in the details)

    3. if automatic fill in doesn't work (which can be the case for Flash based logins for example) you can still just copy and paste the details form your 1Password app
  • autofill just works fine, as always! but i need to type my passwords from time to time manually e.g. in work WITHOUT 1pw (firefox private session, so no cookies, inputs, ... are stored)

since i use the strong pw generator from the beginning my passwords are incredibly safe with at least 4 special characters. unfortunately there are often characters which are not found easily on the keyboard. especially because i switch from pc to mac on a daily basis.

therefore i would like an implementation like at keepass: http://keepass.info/screenshots/pwgen_big.png

there you can in- and exclude special characters on a more user friendly way, considering the passwords which could happen that i have to input manually i would exclude hard to reach and different (pc/mac) character positions. BUT using some! (i am not happy with passwords without special characters ....)

Still don't quite understand why you can't copy and paste. Even if you run Firefox in private mode, can't you open your 1Password app and just copy and paste the password? If you're doing this on a computer without the 1Password app installed you could use 1Password Anywhere via your browser to view your data.
  • i did not know 1passwordanyhwere till now <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' /> thx! just set it up with dropbox and it rocks!

BUUUUUT: this only helps in, lets say, 50% of the situations. there are pcs/macs i can not trust and would NOT use 1pwanywhere! on the rest i am still using my iphone and enter passwords manually. and its really pain in the ass if i cant use 1pws password generator because the special characters used are not really suitable for me.

thats why i would really see a feature like http://keepass.info/screenshots/pwgen_big.png in 1pw. it is very easy to implement and it could be also an option to not "over confuse" "newbie" customers like : "[] change the way random special characters are used". and then a list appears where you can select and de-select special characters where you think are uncomfortable.

    i would really love seeing this feature in a further release <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

Hmm - I see what you mean. But if you don't trust a machine using 1PasswordAnywhere then I wouldn't trust it to enter any password information manually.

I'd have to agree with Michael here. It's very easy for someone to install a keylogger and then have access to anything you type. Of course, the same is true for clipboard history. If you suspect a computer has been compromised, then don't use it.

In addition, as Michael mentioned earlier, it would be hard for us to implement such a feature that would vary based on the keyboard being used. If we did something like KeePass does, then we might get complaints about wanting some of the characters in the group but not all of them. The best way is to either turn off symbols or modify the passwords yourself. Any time you create a password, you can modify it in the text box and your changes will be used and saved.

    I hope that helps!
