Can't login to NewYorker Digital Edition

Magazines are really struggling. The New Yorker's attempt is a javascript magazine that you read in a browser (no offline available). The url is not the standard url. it is archives.newyorker.com, which has nothing to do with archives--go figure. It brings you to the "online" magazine. The login is a javascript dialog. 1password seems unable to see it as a web form and can't fill it in. Any solution?

    Welcome to the forum, Lewis!

1Password for Windows includes a nifty feature called auto-type, with which you can get a quite workable solution.

Create a Login item for New Yorker Online

Of course, you need to do this only once.

In 1Password, click the Login tool.

In the Login dialog box, create a new Login that looks like this:
Important: Be sure you type that URL exactly as shown in the Location field, above.

Click the OK button to save the new Login.
Log in to the New Yorker Online site

In 1Password, select the item (1), and click on the URL in the Location field in the details area (2):

In the browser window that appears, place the insertion point in the username field:

Press Alt+Tab, and switch back to 1Password:

Back in 1Password, with the New Yorker Online item still selected, as shown, click on the Auto-Type tool:

Back in the browser, with the username and password fields filled, click on the ENTER link:

    ______________

It's not quite as easy as just pressing Ctrl+\, but we think it's pretty handy.

    I hope you will, too. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
  • It's too bad that alt-<tab> to 1password, click auto-type, and alt-tab back to the browser is necessary.

Can autotype be added to the browser plugin? It would be much easier to click the toolbar icon for 1password and then select autotype than to switch back and forth. Even better would be doing the "right thing" when I press ctrl-\.

In the grand scheme of things I might as well use copy/paste--it's hardly the end of the world. But, since convenience of auto-filling, auto-typing, auto-login--whatever word I am supposed to use--is an intended benefit of 1password, it would be great to fulfill the promise across the widest range of cases we experience on the internet. It's sort of a hard problem, but not insurmountable.

The auto-type functionality has received an entirely positive reaction, so far. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mellow.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> We're hoping to add it to 1Password for Mac in a future release. I'm sure it could be even better, though, so we appreciate your patience as we continue to improve the entire 1Password product line, Lewis.

    As for terminology:

"auto-save" is what we call the option to have 1Password automatically save new or changed login credentials.

"auto-submit" is what we call the option to have 1Password submit a form after filling in your saved credentials.

"auto-type" (Windows only) is what we call the feature with which 1Password can automatically fill username and/or password fields in a non-browser program, HTTPauth login form, and other "problematic" types of windows and forms with your saved credentials.
We try to use those terms consistently across our entire 1Password product line. Please let us know if we've missed a few spots.
