IPhone master password

I seem to have screwed up my master password on my iPhone only. I use dropbox to sync. What are my options?

Welcome to the forums, Jscherbel. I'm sorry that you are having this problem.

Your master password is used to encrypt all your confidential information for each item that has the master password enabled; without this password the data in these items cannot be recovered. Your 1Password master password is known only by you, and we cannot reset it for you; if we could, that would be a security hole that criminals could use to steal your data.

If you cannot remember the password, you will need to reset your master password. Make sure you're using the latest version of 1Password on your iOS device and then navigate to More > Settings > Security and tap Reset Master Password. Note that any entries that were previously protected by the master password will be permanently lost.

If you reset the database there are a few ways to retrieve your data after the reset:

    * If you've been using Dropbox to sync your data with 1Password for Mac or Windows, just set up Dropbox sync'ing again, and your data will start sync'ing to your iPhone automatically. Please see this guide for instructions:

    http://help.agile.ws/1Password3/cloud_syncing_with_dropbox.html

    * If you've previously sync'ed your 1Password data with 1Password for Mac using Wi-Fi, you can easily restore your data during the next Wi-Fi sync:

    http://help.agile.ws/1Password3/sync_to_iphone.html

    * If you've used the built-in "backup and restore" feature to save a backup copy of your 1Password data, you can use it again to restore that saved backup file. You can read more about our backup and restore option here:

    http://help.agile.ws/1Password_touch/backup.html

The first option will apply to you situation, and you should be all set to reinstall and then simply reenable Dropbox syncing. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

Please let me know how it turns out.
  • Thanks for the reply. That's the news I expected. So I just tried a bunch until I figured it out fully expecting it to lock up. 19 tries later and I'm good now.

Is there an auto-lock or something after so many failures?

    Thanks again!

    Hi Jsherble!

    You ask a great question:
Is there an auto-lock or something after so many [master password] failures?
For the four digit unlock code we have a progress back off. After five failed attempts, you need to wait a minute before trying the sixth time. Then there is a two minute wait before you can try the seventh time, and so on.

Because the number of possible master passwords is so much greater than the 1000 possible unlock codes, and because it already takes time to type in a master password, we didn't see doing this as necessary for master passwords.

But with iOS 4 and fast app switching, there are more users who don't use the unlock code at all, relying only on the master password; so this is a decision we should take another look at.

    Cheers,
