Using files in a Knox vault for operations that require Direct Memory Access

<div class="IPBDescription">Performance</div>Hi,

Does the data in a a vault always need to pass through the CPU for decryption first? Because that would slow down operations that require the data to be copied directly from disk to RAM. Thanks.

    Welcome to the forums, Wassili!

There is certainly a bit of overhead when employing any encryption. Knox, unfortunately, has not figured out how to defy science. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

One of the benefits of using Knox rather than FileVault (which will encrypt your entire Home folder) is that you can encrypt only the data that needs to be encrypted. The overhead of the encryption in Knox, while slight, is likely not worth the performance hit on I/O performance sensitive activities such as audio or video production. Fortunately, most folks do not need to encrypt audio/video production data on the fly. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

For most users, daily use includes documents, photos, etc. which are prime candidates for encryption: they may contain highly sensitive information but do not demand the kind of performance audio/video production does.

I hope that helps. Please let me know.

    Cheers!
