1Password Attachments
Moderately new to 1P and just starting to "field trial" the attachments feature. So far working well. But...
1. The data i'm putting into the attachments is critical (that's why it's in 1P .. grin). How robust is the 1P attachment feature? Have people been using this successfully so far, or have there been any issues?
2. It's easy to get files INTO 1P attachments, but the docs are rather silent on getting files back OUT. Right-click on an attachment does nothing. Drag+Drop seems to work. Double-Click opens the file in a target application, but the file is Read Only (Excel for Mac 1011 in this case). Is this by design?
3. FIle size aside (my needs are very modest), are there any issues when syncing, say via DropBox? I know that attachments arent yet supported in iOS (when? .. even storing them would be good).
TIA,
Tim

Hi Tim,

I have been using it ever since they introduced it in the alpha phase and never to this date have I had a single problem

You can use quick look by single clicking the attachment and then pressing the space bar. To delete drag the items to the 1P trash can or single click and press the delete key. Yes AFAIK it is still by design. All my docs open in read only.

My entire software license history plus other important document are in 1P and as far as I am concerned there are no problems w/ dropbox syncing. 1P also makes a backup of its data on a regular basis. (so long as data has changed).
Recently the team introduced a considerable size reduction for attachments my keychain went from 300MB down to 78 MB and usually runs right around that number. We all are hoping for the attachments storage, but to be honest the team doesn't give time frames. So we all are waiting together for this feature.

Just to add to what Tommy has already said, you might want to take a look at Knox. Depending on your needs, it may fit your workflow better.
With Knox you can access your files just as you can in a regular folder, but they are stored in an encrypted vault. 1Password is more or less intended to handle smaller files you do not need to modify regularly (i.e., receipts, scans of sensitive documents, etc.). Attachments in 1Password work similarly to email attachments. You wouldn't try to attach something as large as your iTunes library to an email, and you must save the attachment to a folder before you can work with it. You can't edit a file and then save it back to the original email. You will have to send another email and reattach the file with your changes. Similarly, such limitations exist in 1Password at this time.
For encrypted file storage, try Knox. We offer a free 30-day trial, so you can "kick the tires." Fear not! Even after the trial ends, you are not locked out of your data. We would never do that to you. We only want you to buy a license if you find it useful, not because you feel trapped. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

Hi All,
Just trying out 1 password and have a question. I've saved an excel spreadsheet as an attachment to a secure note, but when I open the spreadsheet it says it is read only. It wasn't read only before I put it in the secure note. Can someone tell me how to change this so I can update the spreadsheet and resave it in my secure note? Thanks!Flag 0 -
Its been that way for a very long time, I dont remember the exact reasoning but there was one. If you need to update it drag it to the desktop make the changes and then drag it back. Its been quite some time since I had to do this but if I remember correctly 1P will advise you that the file already exist and do you want to replace it.
Confirmed as long as you do not change the name it will prompt you to replace it, or keep both etc
Maybe one of the other will stop in and refresh my memory as to why exactly.Flag 0 -
Welcome to the forums, EJ! I have merged your post with what I believe is the appropriate thread. Please see above and let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns. Thanks! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />Flag 0

Hi agile team,
Just wondered if it had ever been floated as an idea/potential feature request to be able to have a document store within 1Password.
So what would be really cool, was if there was an additional section (alongside accounts/wallet etc) which let you store any type of document(in some folder structure)... say if you were to go travelling and needed to keep a safe copy of passport/important documents....
When I go travelling, I am likely to take my iPad and iPhone - but not my main macbook, for convenience.
It'd be great to have a Knox type add-on for iOS devices (and desktop!)... ultra secure. as opposed to just dumping them in my dropbox.
Loving 1Password.
Thanks

Welcome to the forums, Stoldiepops!
1Password currently supports file attachments for any item in a vault. I think Knox works great for what it does, but 1Password is intended as more of a secure information manager rather than file manager. Perhaps I am not understanding your request.
I merged your post with the existing thread on this topic. Please see above and let me know if you have any further questions or could clarify what sort of functionality you are looking for.
Cheers,
P.S. We do also have a feature request thread for attachments in 1Password for iOS. Should I have merged your post there?Flag 0 -
Hi Khad,
thanks for the response...
I guess what I was trying to say, will the attachment feature ever be available in 1Password for iOS devices? If I'm planning to travel, it'd be great to be able to have my attachments on my iOS devices as I wouldn't take my macbook with me whilst travelling (and hence 1Password for mac).
Thanks!Flag 0 -
Unfortunately, I cannot foretell The Future. Attachments in 1Password for iOS are something a lot of us on the team would love to see, but it really is much more complicated than simply "adding attachments". When syncing there is a lot more to consider (even things like users data plan transfer limits). I wish I had a quick answer right now, but all I can say is that this is something we continue to work on. Now with iCloud in the mix, things just got a bit more interesting. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
Offhand, I don't know of any secure file sharing solution that would do what you want. Knox uses Mac OS X's encrypted disk image technology which is not readable outside of Mac OS X and something like Dropbox doesn't store your files encrypted on the iOS device. I guess there is a reason we have not found an quick and easy solution: there may not be one. (That would explain why no one else has cracked this nut either.) But...we have very big nutcrackers here. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_bigsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-D' />
Thanks for your interest in this. I'll pass your vote along to the devs to remind them that our awesome users are still looking for a great solution to the mobile file encryption problem.
If there is anything else I can help with, please let me know.

Thanks for the quick response Khad, top notch customer support as always!
I'm sure it is not a trivial matter including attachments to iOS versions of 1Password... Hopefully the brains at Agile will make it happen one day... I'll keep my eyes open. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
Just off to check out Knox - see what it's like.
