Placing shortcuts or alias to sidebar

Greetings. I am test driving Knox and am a newbie. I seem to be having a problem. I created a vault and placed a main folder which contained sub-folders inside of the vault. One of the sub-folders has a test document inside as well. I dragged the test document, one sub-folder, and the main folder to the sidebar of the finder window, thinking these would be short-cuts or alias to the real ones. I locked the Knox vault, however, when I clicked on the alias for the document it just opened up; it did not ask me for a password. Additionally, when I opened the main folder, I could easily see the sub-folders, and when I clicked on the sub-folder with the document inside, it too was easily visible.

My goal was to hopefully be able to view and unlock a given folder or file from the sidebar w/o having to first find the vault, open it, and then select the folder or file I need.

As another test, I removed all the short-cuts/alias but was able to find the main folder that I had thought was encrypted, unencrypted in my home folder.

What did I do wrong?

In advance, many thanks for the help.

Kind regards,

George

    Welcome to the forums, George!

Please ensure that you do not still have a copy of the data on your hard drive outside of the Knox vault. Is it possible that the shortcuts you created in the sidebar were to the original files not stored in the vault?

Just like a real vault, only what is stored inside is protected. If I make a copy of my birth certificate and store only the original in a vault, the copy is not protected.

Please also ensure that you have not saved your vault password in the OS X keychain. This would preclude a password prompt.

Good Morning Khad and many thanks for your quick response! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_bigsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-D' />

I double checked by removing the shortcuts that remained in the sidebar, launched Knox and opened my vault. Then I dragged a file and a couple of folders within the vault to the sidebar of the finder. I then quit Knox but the shortcuts remained; I was also able to double-click one of the documents and it launched and viewed w/o a problem.

Should I start from scratch again? I'm not sure where to go. Many thanks for your help.

    George,

As I mentioned in my previous reply, please also ensure that you have not saved your vault password in the OS X keychain. This would preclude a password prompt.

You can check this by launching Keychain Access from within your /Applications/Utilities folder. Search for the vault name and let me know if it is listed in Keychain Access.

Hello. I've been out-of-town. Thanks for the response. I checked the keychain. The password was not saved there. I'm now pretty confused. I hope I can get this to work. In the meantime, I am going to try out Espionage while I await further instructions. Thanks again for your help.

    Hey George,

Thanks for writing back. I am really having a hard time reproducing your results. Could you please post a screenshot of Keychain Access with "sparse" as the search term? I will post my own as an example.

This should show all the vaults for which a password is stored in your OS X keychain.

Thanks Khad for the reply. I checked again and was u/a to find the sparse in the keychain. Then I tried to upload my screen shot but was unsuccessful. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

Unfortunately at the present time I don't have any more time to devote to this. Espionage is working well for me and I will use that. I will continue to keep Knox in my mind as my needs change or evolve, or it becomes obvious that Knox is a better solution for me.

Many thanks for your time. I've immensely appreciated your troubles and wish we could've resolved this. Fortunately I have a solution that will work for the time being and due to my crazy work schedule I cannot put any more time into this. I really appreciate it Khad! Have a great week.

    Kindest regards,

    George
