Request: <10 option for # of backups

I know the message says data storage is cheap and backups are recommended. Both true statements.

But a minimum of 10 backups is too much. 3-5 only are needed. At 60+ megs per file (whoa, why so much?) x 10 = > 600 MB. This is not insignificant for an older 80 gig laptop drive.

Right now I've had to set it not to backup on that (older) laptop for limited storage reasons. But if I could set it for 3 or 5 it would be fine.

Thanks.

  • Hi woodenbrain,

I certainly see your point, 600mb is a lot for a smaller drive, I guess we're all just used to have drives with 100gb+ capacities in our Macs.

I think we set the minimum to be 10 backups because this effectively gives you 2 working weeks of 1Password data backed up. As for why your data file is 60mb, do you have any attachments stored with your items? If so, remember these are part of your data file, so they can add up.

I'll mention to our developers to see if we can offer a lower minimum or a custom option with an appropriate warning for users who may not think about setting this, in our opinion, too low.

    Hope that helps,

I used this Terminal command to reduce the number of backups:
defaults write ws.agile.1Password keychainRotationFrequency 3
Number 3 being the number of back up I chose to have.

In addition to the Terminal command Gilles provided (which may not [always] work), I would suggest rebuilding your data file to possibly reduce its size. Please ensure that you are running the very latest version of 1Password and then select "Rebuild Data File…" from the Help > Troubleshooting menu.

I don't think we can offer a guarantee that an arbitrary integer will always be respected as a value for keychainRotationFrequency in 1Password's preferences, so the UI is still the best place to make such a change. That said, it may work in a pinch. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />
