DropBox sync stopped working

DropBox sync stopped working

I upgraded the iPhone to OS to 4.2.1 in december 2010. Several apps stopped working so I had to reinstall everything. I'm using 1Password app 3.5.2

DropBox sync has stopped working since then because the DropBox syncing was turned off, but now when I turn it back on, it will not work (see error below). The 1Password.agilekeychain file in DropBox is updating and will update on/to my MacBook via wi-fi (I use a iMac as my primary Mac) but not on my iPhone

When I try to initiate a DropBox sync I get this msg.

"Failed to find the data file on dropbox. Please make sure you are using the latest version of 1Password on your Mac. Also make sure Dropbox is fully synced on your desktop If this does not help try to reset dropbox settings in the account screen"

Since DropBox is working I'd rather not do this "reset" that I do no really understand

Welcome to the forums, Paul. I'm sorry that you are having this problem.

Please try resetting Dropbox syncing on your iPhone (Settings > Sync > Dropbox > Account > Reset). This will not affect your data in any way but merely reset syncing.

If that doesn't do the trick, could you please tell me if you have more than one data file anywhere in your Dropbox folder?

To help us track down the issue more quickly, could you please email us your Diagnostics Report? To generate the report from 1Password on your Mac, open 1Password and select Help > Troubleshooting > Diagnostics Report. Then attach the entire file to an email to support@agilewebsolutions.com.

Please include a link to this thread in order that we might more quickly "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, though.

Duh, sorry I go into iPhone settings and do not see Sync, sorry. Do not see Dropbox listed there either. Did not see sync within the Dropbox App settings.

You need to set up 1Password's Dropbox syncing (or reset it) from within the 1Password app on your iPhone.

Please open 1Password on your iPhone and then tap [More] > Settings > Sync > Dropbox > Account > Reset.

Welcome to the forums, munishp. I'm sorry you are having this problem as well.

Could you tell me what the outcome was when you followed my above instructions? Have you sent in a Diagnostics Report?

    Please let me know.

    Thanks!

I am having the exact same problem. I have run through all the steps you have mentioned and nothing is working. I even took the step of spending the extra money to upgrade to 1Password 3 as it stated that I should make sure I was running the latest version and it still doesn't work. Feeling like I wasted my money by upgrading....

If it makes any difference I sync my 1Password.agilekeychain to my other Macs using symlinks in Dropbox and it works beautifully. Could the problem be the use on symlinks?

    Thank you

Very likely. Please try placing your data file in your Dropbox folder directly and let me know if that helps.

    That worked, thanks!

I do have one thought though. While I understand how it now works for use with DB on the iPhone, part of the reason I liked having a symlink of the actual file in my DB folder was that if somehow the link was actually deleted I would not actually lose the file, just the symlink. It was just another level of protection of my data for me. Is there no way to have that pointer file in the default 1Password folder location and then use a symlink in the DB folder?

    Thanks

Unfortunately, no. Dropbox itself (apart from 1Password) is not really intended for syncing files outside of the Dropbox folder. Much of its success and reliability are due to its simplicity. Please keep in mind that by default 1Password does create a backup of your data file every day, though. The default location is:
~/Library/Application Support/1Password/Backups
You can even change the backup location to be within your Dropbox folder if you want some offsite backup for your local backups. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

Of course, one of the nice things about Dropbox is its versioning and file recovery. If you ever lose your data file, you should be able to recover it via the Dropbox web interface.

I hope that helps. Please let me know.

    Cheers,

Thanks Khad, you and Stu have been very helpful in answering my questions. Thanks for the reminder about the 1Password backups and recovering from the Dropbox web interface as well.

Love the product, keep up the good work!
