To many clicks - asking for a feature

Windows, Firefox plugin

OK, I was a user of an roboform program for a while, and I am missing some of their features so decided to share it with you. When I go to some webpage and I'm not loged in it takes me 2 or 3 clicks and a master password (by the way is it possible to turn off). With roboform it was just 1 click.

1pass scenario

typing forum.agile.ws

clicking 1P icon in the firefox

loging with 1pass

meanwhile there is a master password

the other program

typing forum.agile.ws

they keycard is already bolded just below the address so all I have to do is click it.

Some of you might actually say what is my problem 1 or 2 more clicks doesn't cost anything and I have to agree but still as a former roboform user I find it really annoying. Is there anything you can do about it ? I mean the less clicks and the simples the better I don't want to see interface of the 1pass every time I want to log in somewhere.

    Hi ganldaf80,

1Password is quite different from Roboform, in many ways, and I know it's taken some of our users a bit of time to get used to the 1Password way of doing things.

You can't disable the prompts for a master password, but you can tell 1Password how long it should wait before auto-locking your master password by going to Preferences > Security from within 1Password for Windows. One thing to note here is that this 'timer' is reset when you quit the 1Password application or the browser you're using as we currently don't have a service in place in Windows that handles the auto-lock, though this is something we're looking into.

The 'click' problem is really down to the fact that our Firefox extension for Windows has been written from the ground up, and so a lot of the evolution and features of our Mac extension haven't come across, yet. So, right now, using the mouse, you'll have to click the '1P' button in your Firefox toolbar and then click to fill in your login, and then enter your master password.

However, if you use the default Ctrl + \ keyboard shortcut when you're on a page where you have a single Login stored will automatically fill this login for you, or if you have multiple Logins you'll be given the 1Password window to select the Login you'd like to fill.

We're always working to improve the interface of 1Password, and in fact we've added many features to the Firefox extension already. I know Stefan (our hard working Windows developer) reads these forums, and often posts his own feedback, so without knowing what limitations he faces when developing the Firefox extension I can't say for certain if we can reduce the number of clicks, but I do hope the keyboard shortcut helps out, I know I find it incredibly useful (Once I remember to stop hitting the command key on my Mac keyboard when using Windows 7 in VMWare that is!)

    Hope that helps,

Instead of clicking on the 1P button, you can press Ctrl+\ on your keyboard. If you have unlocked 1Password before, then it should not prompt you with anything, and simply auto-fill your username and password.

    ganldaf80, welcome to the forum!

You can read about 1Password's locking behavior in Why is the 1Password data file locked? in the FAQ section of the user's guide.

We'll probably look into possible alternatives to the current cross-process lock/unlock behavior in future releases, but only to the extent that we can do so without sacrificing the security of your data.

    Thanks for your patience, ganldaf80!
  • Thank you for a quick answers, the shortcut solve 1st problem.

I really hope you will be able to disable the master password as I have disabled it in preferences but as you said it resets way to often, and it is simple pain in the ass <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> Looking forward into more features from MacOS.

On behalf of myself, Stefan and David, you're very welcome, ganldaf80.

I honestly don't think we'll make it possible to completely remove the master password, that's just too much of a security risk without a secure way to store it, like we have with the Mac OS X Keychain. I think the 'happy medium' will be to have a 'global unlock state' for 1Password for Windows so that you can leave your master password unlocked across all apps for the time you specify.
  • That, and the ability to autofill fields (discussed before elsewhere), would also win me over all the way to 1Password for good <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' /> Keep up the excellent work <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
  • Thanks Sophia!

We're really excited to add more and more features to 1Password, to make it the best password manager it can be, on all platforms. Of course, before we add any feature, we have to consider the security implications, that's our first and foremost concern in everything we do.

    Keep watching for those updates <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
