Help with changing passwords

I just download the trial for 1Password.

I put in all the information to create a login and saved the information. 1Password works great.

But now I need to have 1Password change the password for that website and generate a secure password.

I followed these instructions (I think) but it's now working properly. First of all once I it submit I do not get this dialog box:

Huh? So when I go to the 1P icon for that site to try it again it will not fill the form and login.

What am I doing wrong?

Also, what exactly does "Unfilled" mean and how do you "File" them? And what is the purpose of this feature?

Hi Xbones, welcome to the forums!

Is this happening to all Logins or just a few? Some sites do not properly send an event when pressing the "submit" button to let 1Password know that you're submitting the form. In this case, it is usually best to do the following:

Log out of that site and go to the Login Page
Enter your username but not the password, put your mouse cursor into the password field and then go to the 1Password button to select “Fill the last Generated Password”
Usually, you can press the “Login” button on the site and 1Password should ask to update this Login but if it doesn’t, you can press the 1Password button to select “Save Login”
Set the action field to “Replace Login” instead of “Create new Login” to update your Login
The “Unfiled” smart folder is a listing of all your items that has not been filed into a regular folder. You can ignore it if you don’t want to use folders to organize your items. To fill, you simply drag an item into a folder that you created.

Thank you. I am going to love 1Password once I figure it out a little better.

I did this and it works OK. I'm surprised that the program didn't ask if I wanted to save the information. (It's on this site BTW <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />)

So now I will always have the "Fill Last Generated Password" under the "Fill land Submit Password" in the drop down????
  • LOL...another question...

I had 1Password generate a PW for this site. Why is it that the "Generated Passwords" is empty (right side in the Vault?)

Can you open 1Password and go to the 1Password Menu > Preferences > Logins and uncheck “Enable Autosave of Logins in browser” and check it again. See if that’ll work better.
Is it empty inside or you don’t see Generated Passwords vault? It is hidden by default, which is why I asked.

    To make it show it,

    1) Open 1Password, unlock and go to the 1Password Menu > Preferences > General

    2) Under "Display in Sidebar", check "Generated Passwords”

If it is not showing anything, open 1Password and go to Help > Troubleshooting > Clear Cache and restart 1Password.

I'm a little confused. I did everything you said above.

The "Generated Passwords" folder is empty even though 1Password has generated some passwords. It's still empty.

What was the reason for unchecking the “Enable Autosave of Logins in browser” box in preferences? What was that suppose to accomplish?

1Password seems to work OK but it is not as automatic and intuitive as you guys seem to say. Most everyting has to be maniuplated and done manually.

Not discouraged but just trying to understand what the program is suppose to do and why it's not doing it OR if there is someting I am doing incorrectly before I buy a family pack. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
  • OK after changing all the things you recommended I can safely say that the program does not work with regard to changing a password...

Not sure where I go from here.

I go to the change password screen on a Website and enter the current password. Then I choose "Generate Strong Password" and hit the submit button. I do not get:

The Save Password for this site bar from 1Password or

The dialog box shown above in my first post in this thread.
So then I have to go and do every thing manually to get everything to work properly. Since I have many sites that will require this feature to generate strong passwords doing it manually will be a lot of extra work. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/angry.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Any other ideas why this won't work?

The "Generated Passwords" folder seems to work somewhat although once it had 2 items in it now just 1. Does it only keep those for a certain amount of time? Or, if I deleted a login entry where 1Password generated the PW does it delete it from the "Generated Passwords" folder? Hmph.

That’s the setting for the 1Password to auto-save or auto-update your Logins. I was trying to see if resetting the setting will help get 1Password to work better.

Unfortunately, you’re right, it shouldn’t be this manual. If it is happening to all logins, there’s something wrong with your 1Password install.

    Hey XBones,

Thanks for evaluating 1Password. I'm sorry if you have gotten off to a rocky start.

It sounds like one of the main problems is that the "Update Login" dialog box does not always pop up when you are updating your password on a website. I'm sorry this has been the case. We are looking into improving the way in which your passwords are updated when you change them on the websites you visit. In the meantime, you may need to change your password on the site (using the Strong Password Generator) and then go to the login page to re-save the login using the "Fill Last Generated Password" feature to log in. The Last Generated Password (along with the rest of your data) will not be available to anyone else when 1Password is locked. I thought I understood that to be a concern of yours, so I just wanted to address that.

It also sounds like there may have been some confusion with regard to the Strong Password Generator and the Generated Passwords section. Generated Passwords will only be saved in the identically named section in the sidebar of the main 1Password application if you click the "Fill" or "Save" button when generating them. The whole process will be cancelled — the password will not be saved or filled — if you click the "Cancel" button. That may not have been the case for you, but I thought it wise to mention.

If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

We are always here to help!
  • I am also a new user who just downloaded 1password after I bought the ipad/iphone version. I am confused on the workflow of creating an entry in the 1pw database of an existing login and then upgrading that login to one with stronger password. Afterall that is the reason why I am considering to implement 1password across the devices.

I have a Powerbook laptop that has OSX and VMware running windows

    I have an iphone

    I have a new Ipad2

I have a GMail account that is online and on OSX mail client as well iPhone and ipad mails.

So can you work me through a scenario to where to I start creating an entry in the 1Password database and how do I update all the other passwords in the other devices???

I think I need to generate an 1pw entry in OSX for gmail from one of the browsers like safari (I figured out how to do that)

then change the password to a strong one in the same browser (Looking at your tutorials and in this forum, it is not clear to me)

Then change the password in my OSX mail client (it is not clear to me)

then move the database via dropbox to my ios devices (I think I can do this)

then change the passwords there (not clear to me at all)

Actuallly a short Youtube video would be best!!!

I'm sorry for the confusion, George. Let me see if I can unravel it for you.

First, it's important to distinguish between saving passwords in 1Password and saving passwords for other applications to the system keychain (either on the Mac or iOS). These are entirely separate. If you change a password in 1Password, you'll need to manually update the other applications like Mail to use the new password or adjust your accounts' settings in the Preferences application on iOS.

So, you'll want to get your data into 1Password as it is now. That's the first step. We have a guide here but for most sites, autosave will kick in for you if you have it enabled in the 1Password preferences. So, once you have your data saved in 1Password, you can then use the strong password generator to update the login by following this guide. If the prompt to update the login does not show for you, you can manually locate the new password (or it might still be in your clipboard) and change the password for the login manually in the main 1Password application.

Once you've done this, you'll need to update Mail on your Mac and iOS devices with the new password. This has to be done manually using copy and paste or by entering the password with the keyboard. (I always have trouble entering them by hand because I create ridiculously long random passwords that are invariably hard to type even on my full keyboard, nevermind the iOS one!) The same process would apply to other applications that rely on these account details. For instance, if I change my MobileMe or Gmail password, I need to update Mail as well as iChat because I use those accounts in both places.

I hope that helps clarify things. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
