1Password iPhone to iPad

<div class="IPBDescription">A couple of questions concerning an issue I'm having.</div>Before owning an iPhone 4, I owned an iPod in which I got 1Password Pro. I wasn't aware, nor am I using, any of the desktop applications.

After ditching my iPod and getting my iPhone, I wanted to move all my information from it to my new iDevice, and I did so by simply restoring my iPod's old backup into my iPhone. Now, I have a new addition to my iOS family: an iPad 2.

You see, in this case, I thought it would be a good idea not back up my iPhone's data and just start fresh--that is, until I started encountering some problems with syncing between devices. My iPhone has all my 1 Password Pro data, and I want that same data on my iPad, however I can't seem to figure out how to do that via online means. I really don't want to restore my iPhone's back up in order to get just that one app.

Any help with this issue?

  • Hi Dario,

First of all, welcome to our forums, please make yourself at home here, there's coffee and cake over in the Lounge <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

So, at the moment there isn't a way to sync your 1Password data from the iPhone to your iPad, without first setting this up in our desktop applications, though this is something we're hoping to make possible in the future.

If you're looking for a true sync experience, so the data on your iPhone is synced with your iPad, and vice versa, with changes being automatically synced, then the best way to do this is to download one of the trial versions of 1Password, for Mac or Windows whichever platform you use, and then setup syncing with the free and secure Dropbox service by following our guides here:

    http://help.agile.ws/1Password3/configure_dropbox_on_mac.html (Mac)

    http://help.agile.ws/1Password_Windows/tutorials.html#setting_up_dropbox_sync (Windows)

Once you have a 1Password.agilekeychain file setup in Dropbox, you can then follow our iOS sync instructions to get the data from your iPhone to Dropbox and then to your iPad:

    http://help.agile.ws/1Password3/cloud_syncing_with_dropbox.html

Although you need to use the desktop apps to set this up, you're free to uninstall them after the setup, as uninstalling won't remove the data file from Dropbox and so both your iPhone and iPad can still sync. If, as many users do, you start to enjoy having the desktop version, drop us a note via http://agilewebsolutions.com/contact_us and we'll see what we can do to give you a little 'incentive' to purchase the desktop version as an existing iOS customer.

If setting up Dropbox syncing isn't an option there is a solution to allow you to transfer your data between the two devices, but this is by no means intended as a sync solution and is primarily designed as a backup service. If you'd like to give this a try you can find more details in our user guide here:

    http://help.agile.ws/1Password_iPad/sync_multiple_devices.html

Hope that helps, and I'm sorry the process isn't better right now, we hope that will change in the future <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

    @Stu,

I'im still a little confused on how to use Dropbox as means of Syncing, not to mention completely lacking the knowledge on the Desktop applications.

As of now, I have downloaded the Windows version, however I can't understand one of the steps.

In order to use the program and sync over with my iDevices, I would have to manually add all my data and passwords into it first, or is there any way to get the data off my iPhone--where all my data is--and into the desktop program?
  • Dario,

Don't worry, that's what we're here for, to help you get started and answer any questions you have, related to 1Password of course, though I'm sure we can answer the odd general knowledge question too <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

The Dropbox syncing process is truly two-way, so when you create a new data file in Dropbox using the 1Password for Windows app, you'll have a blank data file. Then, when you sync your 1Password data on the iPhone with Dropbox this data is pushed into that empty file which you can then tell your iPad to sync with.

My colleague David, our resident Windows guru, has created a wonderful guide on how to get your data from your iOS device, in this case an iPhone, to Windows using Dropbox and you can find this here:

    http://help.agile.ws/1Password_Windows/iOS-to-Windows.html

Once you're happy that your data is in 1Password for Windows, just setup Dropbox syncing on your iPad and you should see all your data come across.

Hope that makes some sense, please do yell at me if not <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

Okay, I think I have followed all the steps and so far and I think I got Dropbox to sync between devices.

Now I've encountered another problem during the process: "Problem loading 1Password data file" error. It asks for a specific key data file.

Where are you seeing this error message, Dario? Is it within the Dropbox app on your iPad, when you go to the 1Password.html file within your 1Password.agilekeychain folder?

If so, I'm sorry for the confusion, you need to install 1Password Pro on your iPad if you haven't done so already (don't worry, it will be free providing you use the same Apple ID you used to purchase this previously). Once you've done that, please create a new database within 1Password on your iPad and then go to Settings > Sync > Dropbox and follow the instructions there.

Hope that gets you up and running.
  • Nevermind, it's working now! Don't know exactly what I did, but apparently everything has been installed.

Thank you so much for the help!
  • Excellent, that's great to hear Dario, and thank you for posting this. One of the best things about doing support via our forums is that everyone can see the conversation and if they're having a similar problem, hopefully, they can get the answers here.
