Key shortcut doesn't work, and ALWAYS locked

I am a new convert from eWallet. After exploring the trial version on my mac at home, I got the Mac/Windows combined license so I could use it at work as well, where I have no choice but to use Windows. It was a bit of a shocker to try to use the Windows version (with IE8 and Firefox 3.6) after having such a nice time with the Mac version. I didn't expect it to be as pretty, but . . .

First, I had to find the trick for getting the 1P icon to appear in IE8 and Firefox.

Then, I couldn't understand why I had to enter the master pw EVERY time I accessed my data in 1Password. I read on the forum all about how that is a currently unavoidable difference between the versions, but it sounded like you shouldn't need to re-enter it if you don't exit the browser. So I use 1Password to log into a website, then log out, I do NOT close any window, then immediately try to use it to log into the same or different website, and I have to unlock the data again. This doesn't sound like the behavior described on the forum.

Many, I would say most, of the logins that worked fine in Safari/Mac don't work on Windows. It also seems inconsistent about automatically offering to save new logins, but I haven't got the pattern fixed on that yet.

Finally, the Ctrl+\ shortcut seems to be completely nonfunctional. It does nothing. Ever.

I would be grateful for any pointers on how to fix what can be fixed here, and the equanimity to accept what I cannot change. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

    Welcome to the forum, Jim!

We always ask that new users take a few minutes to read the "Introduction," "Getting Started," and "Tutorials" sections of the user's guide. They're short, and they'll give you the information you need to get up to speed quickly. As you use 1Password for Windows, we believe you'll find the "FAQ" section to be a useful resource. (You'll see a few reference to the "FAQ" in the rest of my reply.)

    We'll keep working on that. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> Please see Why doesn't 1Password for Windows look like 1Password 3 on my Mac?

Hmm. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> You should be able to control how long your data stays unlocked. Please see Why is the 1Password data file locked?, and let us know if the auto-lock preferences aren't working as advertised.

That does happen. The standard procedure is to create a new Login in your Windows browser, let Dropbox sync it to your Mac, and then test it in your Mac browser.

If the Windows-created Login works on the Mac, you can delete the Mac-created Login and have only one to maintain.

If it doesn't work on the Mac, you'll have to maintain both of them, but 1Password on each platform should offer only the Login that works on that platform when you press Command-\ or Ctrl+\.

I hope some of that helps, at least a little. Please let us know, Jim, and thanks again for joining us in the forum!

Thank you for your patience and helpful pointers David. The link about the Ctrl+\ not working, in the last step, revealed what is probably my main problem. In the Internet Options control panel, Advanced tab, the option "Enable third-party browser extensions" is grayed out. Apparently my employer/system admin prevent that from being available. I'm a bit confused because I did get the little 1P icon to show up with a menu connected to it in IE. But maybe that's not an "extension", while the shortcut is? My next question is, does Internet Options only affect IE? Because I found that now the Ctl+\ IS working in Firefox, at least some of the time. Anyway, I guess the other problem, having to unlock the data each and every time, even when I keep the browser window open, could be connected to that locked setting?

So anyway, it seems I might be able to get things to work if I make Firefox the default browser and mostly forget about trying to use 1Password in IE.

I had read most of that help pages online for the Mac version, now I see that there is a whole different set for the Windows version, so I wasn't as well-read as I thought. Anyway, thanks again.

    Jim

Edit: After more testing everything now seems to work as expected in Firefox.
  • Thanks for the follow-up, Jim.

I'm not sure why IE lists the 1Password extension as two components or how they divide the single add-on that 1Password actually installs for IE. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> So I can't think how or why one of those components would or even could be enabled when the other is disabled.

As you may have noticed in the "sticky" post at the top of this forum, there are other problems with the post-Beta release of IE 9; if that's the version you've got installed, you might have better luck with IE 8. (See the other post for a link to IE 8.)

I'm happy to hear that the 1Password extension for Firefox is working as expected. Thanks for letting us know!
