Updating entry issues

Whenever I change some of my account settings via a website, 1Password does a great job of detecting this, and offers to save the changes to that website's login entry. When I accept this, it does update the correct entry, but also creates a new duplicate record. Is this a known issue, or am I making a newbie mistake?

    Hey noobinator,

Are you seeing the "Update Login" dialog box?

If not, you might simply be creating a new login. You can select "Replace login" from the regular save password prompt if you are not getting the "Update Login" dialog box shown above.

I hope that helps. Please let me know.
  • Yep, I am definitely getting the update prompt, and it does update the original record as well.

Hm. So you're getting the "Update Login" window which updates everything fine in the login item but also creates a duplicate login? Could it be the generated password? Generated passwords have a keyhole icon like the top one here:

Generated Passwords are always stored separately in the Generated Passwords section in 1Password's sidebar (Preferences > General > Display in Sidebar > Generated Passwords). They won't show up in the Logins vault (since they are not Logins), but they will show up if you search "Everywhere" in 1Password. They are a safety net in case you do not save a new login item but have changed your password on a site. You can then retrieve the Generated Password and create a new login without having to reset your password via email or whatever mechanism the site has in place.

They do no harm in the Generated Passwords section, and you can delete them if you wish. The Generated Passwords section is intended to be a safety net, though, so we recommend leaving it intact. You can disable its display in the sidebar if it bothers you (Preferences > General > Display in Sidebar > Generated Passwords). It is completely separate from your Logins which are actually displayed in your browser(s).

If anyone knows about an abundance of Generated Passwords cluttering up a data file, you can be sure that we at Agile do (with all the testing we constantly perform)! There are too many to worry about. I treat it like my Gmail archive. I never look at it, but I can search it if I ever need to. And I have certainly needed to once or twice after I thought I had saved a login but hadn't. Saved my bacon on more than one occasion. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

It's only a minor annoyance (but is one nonetheless IMO), but when using the 'Generate Password' toolbar button, that's all I expect it to do. I can understand a new record might be created if none exists, just in case, but since there was already a record in the database, there is no reason to create duplicates (that's why we have backups). All IMO of course, and do appreciate the responses! I guess I am a little OCD about duplicate records, since I already have to deal with so much data <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

It is not a duplicate login item but a completely separate password history item. It's like the difference between bookmarks and history in your browser. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />

We do have some plans to change the behavior slightly which I think may end up being more in line with your expectations. I do not have a time frame for a specific relese, but we think we can improve here.

    Thanks for the feedback!
