Extra Stuff in My Unfiled Folder
<div class="IPBDescription">Organizational issue</div>I do love this software and I particularly love how organized it allows me to be. But here's the thing. Almost every time I create a new password and put it in a specific folder, I end up with a second file in the Unfiled folder called Password for X, 'X' being the name of the new password (I write 'almost' because I notice my latest entry, instead of being 'Password for megainsurance.com' just says 'megainsurance.com.' I'm guessing this is a change with the latest version of 1P). Do I need these files? Is there a way to hide them? Why do I have them in addition to the filed entry?
Also in my Unfiled folder are a copy of everything I've ever entered in Software. Why is that? Can I throw them away from Unfiled without problems?
Alright, I'm a little anal; I'll admit it. What I would like is an empty Unfiled folder. How do I achieve this.
Thanks,
Martin

The Unfiled folder is meant to behave just as you describe. Nothing is wrong. You can leave it alone entirely if you wish.
It's one of the two default Smart Folders that come with iPassword - and don't worry, what you see in there is not a set of duplicates, but a data set intentionally mirroring all your password records that you have not yet filed.
Once you start filing them, you'll see the total in Unfiled decrease and will no longer see the passwords in there - but in their new filed locations instead.Flag 0 -

I guess I'm not explaining myself well, Mark. Let's say I've created a new login for my amazon.com account and named it 'amazon.' If I didn't choose a specific folder to place it in, it will, of course, go to the Unfiled folder. And let's say I then move it from the Unfiled folder to my Shopping folder. If I go back to the Unfiled folder 'amazon' is no longer there, but there is still something called 'Password for Amazon.com.' It has a keyhole for an icon.
Also, If I click on 'Software' and then create a new software license it appears in the Unfiled folder.
Probably no clearer I bet,

All items exist in the "All" smart folder from their creation until such a time as you delete them from 1Password.
Similarly, every single item (including Software Licenses) will show up in the "Unfiled" folder when it is created. Once you file the item in a [non-smart] folder, it will no longer appear in the "Unfiled" smart folder.
The keyhole icon represents a generated password. Please see my response in the "Confusion with Generated Passwords" thread.
Please also ensure that you are using the latest version of 1Password (unless that generated password for Amazon.com was created a while ago). We removed the leading "Password for" from generated passwords, so all future password you generate should only have their domain name as the title (i.e. "example.com" rather than "Password for example.com").
I hope that helps. Please let me know. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

Alright, now I'm feeling like I simply am not explaining myself clearly. Let me try again. Is there a way to completely empty the Unfiled folder? I've filed every Login in an appropriate custom folder, I created all Software Licenses after first clicking on the Software icon, I created my identity after first clicking on the Identities icon and I created all secure notes after first clicking on the Secure Notes icon. But my Unfiled folder still contains 19 Passwords and all of my Software Licenses, Identities and Secure Notes.
The 19 Generated Passwords also appear in the Generated Passwords category in the Sidebar, but if I delete them from Unfiled they disappear from the other place as well.
As for Software, Identity and Personal Notes, it seems silly that I need to create three new folders called Software, Identity and Personal Notes simply to empty them from the Ufiled folder.
I know I'm sweating this a little too much, but it is a really swell piece of software; I'd just like my copy to be a little cleaner.

Yep. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_bigsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-D' /> As I mentioned in my previous post:
…every single item (including Software Licenses) will show up in the "Unfiled" folder when it is created. Once you file the item in a [non-smart] folder, it will no longer appear in the "Unfiled" smart folder.
If an item is not filed it will show in Unfiled.
It doesn't matter where you file the items, that is a personal preference. However, if they are not in a [non-smart] folder you created, they will continue to show in Unfiled. Because they are not…filed. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />
Vaults are not folders and are not factored in to the Unfiled smart folder. The criteria is merely: is the item in a folder? No? Show it here.
Should I take this as a feature request to change the "Unfiled" smart folder to the "Unfiled Logins" smart folder?Flag 0 -
If we called it 'Not yet assigned by the user to a smart folder created by the user' here, would that make it clearer why it's behaving as it does, Martin?

Alright, now you're just getting snarky, Mark. I'm now clear on the intent so, yes Khad, I do think I'm offering a feature request. I'm willing to bet I'm not the only user that has no need for different folders for different software, identities, secure notes and wallet items. To empty the Unfiled folder though, I have to create folders —possibly simply, redundantly, named 'Software,' 'Identities,' 'Secure Notes' and 'Wallet'— just to empty the Unfiled folder.
And I'd still have all the Generated Passwords in the Unfiled folder. But to what end? There is a Generated Passwords vault; what purpose is there for these to also appear in the Unfiled folder? This is an extremely useful and pretty elegant application, which is exactly why I was so confused on this issue. I could see no reason for my issue. So here are my feature requests:

Create a preferencce that leave entries out of the Unfiled folder by category much like there are currently 'Display in Sidebar' options.

Leave Generated Passwords out of the Unfiled folder
Thanks,

Martin,
So sorry; not at all my intention <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
When I switched to 1P a couple of months or so ago, there were some features (this one included) that I didn't at first understand.
When it was explained to me (as Khad has done here) that the 'Unfiled' folder was the first stop for all new records before I chose (if I did choose) to create a User folder for them and file them there, it all made sense.
Certainly, it'd be silly actually to rename the unfiled folder in the way I suggested, but I think such a name explains how it works.
I also agree with your Preferences request!
Good luck!

At least out of the built-in Untagged "smart tag" because, for one reason, it's impossible to tag Generated Passwords items so they won't appear there.Flag 0
