Default PW

<div class="IPBDescription">iPad 1 to iPad 2</div>I goofed! I synced new iPad thru iTunes from old iPad and can not open 1 PW with old PW.

Isn't there a default PW that comes with the software; would this unlock it; and would my

Notes still be intact?

Fortunately, I have 1 PW on my iPhone, laptop and desktop. I sure would appreciate

Some insight as to the most appropriate fix. Many thanks from Atlanta, GA.

Welcome to the forums, Franksalot! I'm sorry that you're having this problem.

Your master password is used to encrypt all your confidential information stored within 1Password; without this password your data cannot be recovered. Your 1Password master password is known only by you, and we cannot reset it for you; if we could, that would be a security hole that criminals could use to steal your data.

If you cannot remember the master password, you will need to delete the 1Password app from your iPad and start over. This will also delete all of your 1Password data from your iPad, but there are several ways you might be able to recover that data, after you reinstall the 1Password app:

    * If you've been using Dropbox to sync your data with 1Password for Mac or Windows, just set up Dropbox syncing again in the reinstalled app, and your data will start syncing to your iPad automatically. Please see this guide for instructions:

    http://help.agile.ws/1Password3/cloud_syncing_with_dropbox.html

    * If you've previously sync'ed your 1Password data with 1Password for Mac using Wi-Fi syncing, you can easily restore your data during the next Wi-Fi sync:

    http://help.agile.ws/1Password_iPad/sync_to_mac_manually.html

    * If you've used the built-in "backup and restore" feature to save a backup copy of your 1Password data, you can use it again to restore that saved backup file. You can read more about our backup and restore option here:

    http://help.agile.ws/1Password_iPad/backup.html

Please note that you don't have to repurchase 1Password in order to reinstall the app, providing you're still using the same iTunes account that you used to purchase the app originally, then you will be able to download the current version for free. Unfortunately, it won't look like it's free until you choose to "buy" it and enter your password. You don't have to take our word for it, though. Here is Apple's official support document:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519

I hope that helps. Please let me know.

    Thanks!
  • Many thanks for your thoughts...

I certainly understand the security issues ... But was trying to avoid the work around you described, primarily due to

Items added since last backup - lost!

However, I guess you nailed the solution for getting most of my otherwise lost data. Who said backing up was a waste of time ,-)

Thanks and regards from Atlanta, GA.

BTW. Just for the gods' coder, I do seem to recall that a unique initial PW came with each App download to get it started before creating one's own PW, i.e. Implying

it might just act as a unique default PW, PROVIDED one saved it??? Does that sound plausible?

If a user does not know a password that they provided, is there much chance that they would save one that 1Password provided? <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />

For security reasons, 1Password will always prompt you for the creation of a new password after it has been freshly installed.

I'll tell you what. You'll never catch me saying that. Deriding backup strategies is grounds for being sent to the timeout chair in the corner. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

It doesn't exist until it exists in three places. (Original, Local Backup, Offsite Backup)

If you are not already using Dropbox syncing, of the above options, I would recommend it most strongly. It's a set-it-and-forget-it solution. Always there when you need it, and it Just Works. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

  • Good thinking Khad, re users not remembering a sent/unique PW. However, I take a slight exception for users like me -ratters, who save all receipts for software.

Admittedly, there would be a slight hole is security. However, if that file is locked and only accessible by it's owner it would save the aforementioned

Iterations and associated hassles to rebuild, AND save Xn communications to resolve (from Yn respondents). I believe Drive Genius does a variation on this.

To clarify: why not have PW send each buyer a unique PW at time of purchase; the buyer inserts it in order to set his/ her own PW; in the event the set PW

is forgotten the original PW (from purchase) will override the user's and grant access???

I couldn't agree more about backing up - even getting tattoos in covered places ,-) I'm not a guru on Dropbox though I use it. FWIW, it seems to interfere with my iDisk: I end up

with too many, sic confusing 'local disks' on my Macs (given I have several macs synced with multiple volumes/divisions, e.g. A, B, or C.

(I an NOT a tech wizard but I have become somewhat adept at making Macs levitate 8-/

    I appreciate your thoughts.

BTW, Too many people in Atlanta ... WAY too many in So Cal - ' took me an hour to get OUT of a phone booth!
  • Franksalot,

The thing to note with this approach is that when you purchase 1Password the e-mail you receive contains your license key, this is completely separate from your actual 1Password data which is created the first time you run the app and so it's not tied to your purchase of the app or any 'creation' process on our server.

The other issue with this is that if someone ever got hold of your original password then they would be able to access your 1Password data and override your master password, we think that's a back door that is just not worth the risk because it would mean we'd have to take more steps to secure your license details that we currently don't have in place.

I'm sorry to hear you're having issues with Dropbox and iDisk, not being an iDisk user myself (I don't think I'd ever choose to use it again) I couldn't confirm this, but the two should never conflict as your Dropbox data is stored in a folder on your local drive rather than stored in the same way that your iDisk is connected to your system.

Hope that helps clarify the situation,
