Preview and favicon not downloading
I have seen a few post regarding this, but have not found a solution to this.
When I create a new entry through the browser, the Preview and favicon are not being downloaded. When I try to download all missing icons or download the individual preview it also does not download. I used the see a progress bar come up, when it would download the icons but I no longer see this.
I have about 75 entries some have icons and some do not, I can not remember what I did not get the previews. Perhaps an earlier version of 1P or a different browser, however I tried Safari and it did not download the preview when I created a new entry.
I am using version 3.5.9 on a mid 2010 MBP, my primary browser is Chrome 10.
Thanks,
Dave

Hello Dave,
I'm sorry that you are having this problem. Some sites do not have favicons, but it sounds like the problem is a bit more widespread for you. Are you using Mac OS X's built-in firewall, Little Snitch, or any other software that would be hindering traffic to 1Password's background agent?
Please let me know. Thanks!Flag 0 -

Thanks for the quick reply. Yeah I think my problem is more widespread. I am using the built-in firewall, but tried turning that off and downloading an individual preview, but that did not help.
I also tried duplicating an entry with a preview and downloading the individual preview, but the preview did not download.
Thanks,

To help us track down the issue more quickly, could you please email us your Diagnostics Report? To generate the report from 1Password on your Mac, open 1Password and select Help > Troubleshooting > Diagnostics Report. Then attach the entire file to an email to support@agilewebsolutions.com.
Please include a link to this thread in order that we might more quickly "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

Welcome to the forums, Steve. I'm sorry that you are also having trouble. Are the smaller favicons downloading (shown as the colorful "g" in the bottom right corner of the globe)?

Or nothing at all with the globe?

Hi!
I just started using 1Password as well and I am having the same problem. I downloaded the trial version and added 5 or 6 entries. For this the favicon download worked. After that no new favicon was added to new entries (empty globe). I tried to press the button "download all favicons" in the settings and when that did not work deleted all favicons rebuild the database and pressed again "download all". Unfortunately this does not work leaving me with no favicons.
By now I am using the full version, but the failure to download favicons started before I registered, so I doubt it has something to do with that.
Can you help me? I would very much appreciate it.

Welcome to the forums, Hendrik. I'm sorry that you are having this problem.
We believe the issue may be related to a corrupt preferences file. First quit 1Password and then use the Finder to navigate to
HOME > Library > Preferences > ws.agile.1Password.plist
and move the "ws.agile.1Password.plist" file to your Desktop.
Then relaunch 1Password. You may need to re-enter your license information.
After you have restarted 1Password go through and set your preferences the way that you wish them. Then try fetching previews again.
Please let me know how it turns out.

Hi Khat,
thanks for your response,
it worked! The thumbnails downloaded.

For Facebook and Ebay it even downloaded favicons. For the rest (including Dropbox, Gmail, LinkedIn, etc. who I would expect to have favicons available) it just shows the the small thumbnail next to the blue globe. But that is better than before! Thank you for your help!

Unfortunately, the icons are provided by the websites themselves and are beyond our control. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />
It would be great if every site provided the larger "apple-touch-icon," but we have to work with what they provide.
Regardless, I'm glad everything is working well for you, Hendrik. That is good news! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_bigsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-D' />
If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

I am also having this problem. 1Password does not appear to store the favicon.ico for the entries it creates. I have tried closing 1Password, moving the file HOME > Library > Preferences > ws.agile.1Password.plist to the desktop (and subsequently deleting it) and then re-opening 1Password... as mentioned above... but it did not appear to help.
I am currently running 1Password Version 3.8.11 (build 31205), although I started running 1Password on this Mac at probably around Version 3.8.9 or so. I am running Safari Version 5.1.1 (7534.51.22). My 1Password data is sync'ed, however, with Dropbox and I originally started by using a very old version of 1Password for Windows (although that PC is now running 1Password for Windows Version 1.0.9.235).
I just get completely blank globe icons, no little icon overlay. I have manually download-ed the favicon.ico file and dropped it on some of the 1Password entries. But... (1) this is a pain, and (2) when in "shelf" view, it completely replaces the globe icon with the favicon and does not produce the browser globe with favicon overlay. Aesthetically, this often doesn't work out very well because many favicons are extremely low-res -- having been designed for browser bars -- and being blown up makes them quite blocky.Flag 0 -
Welcome to the forums, arc. I'm sorry that you are having this problem. There is a known issue where the previews are not downloaded automatically, but we are working to resolve this.
Can you test something for me, though?
1. Visit this URL: https://accounts.google.com/
2. Save a brand new Login
3. Edit the Login in the main 1Password application
4. Right-click the image placeholder
5. Select "Download Preview"
Does the preview get downloaded if you follow those steps?

Yes! This worked. Thanks for the tip. Not sure why I didn't notice that option before. I did just upgrade to Version 3.8.12 (build 31220) though, so I don't know if this is a new fix or not. My apologies, I got busy with pre-holiday stuff and forgot about my 1Password issue until I just received the upgrade notice.
I still am pretty sure that I didn't automatically get the favicon and preview. It sounds like it remains a known thorny issue for some reason. Thank you for your continued efforts.

Yes, we need to resolve the issue with automatic downloading of previews, but I'm glad that manually downloading them is working for you until then. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Hey khad
I will assume you gave the url I posted above a tweak <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />
I linked directly to the new support channel, I only do this because OpenDNS refuses 5 out of 10 times to do the redirect and cannot resolve it. Sorry dude I will use the new link but OpenDNS is having some serious issues with it. Just my observation.

Yes, I did tweak it a bit. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />
What you say is very strange. I use OpenDNS and haven't had any trouble... <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_worried.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':S' />
I'll be sure to keep an eye on this.Flag 0 -
I'm having some preview download issues as well. I use OpenDNS. Coincidence? I dunno.
I've now perused quite a few of these threads, and have yet to find instructions for copying and pasting login-entry shelf icons. They aren't the same as screen previews, that's for sure.
I have a few Evernote logins. Two had plain blue globes, and two had what look to me like App icons (and what I gather may actually be Apple Touch icons). I was able to replace the two blue globes with App icons by opening my Applications folder in a Finder window, editing the login entry, and then dragging the application from the Finder into the preview area of the login entry (much as I would do with a software license). That gave me the Evernote.app graphic in both the Shelf and the preview area. After doing a "Download Preview" I have an actual page preview where it belongs, and the App icon on the Shelf.
If I now go from the Shelf to the Widescreen or Traditional layouts, one of my Evernote entries has a white E on a green background, and the other three have what appear to be miniature versions of the App icon. Weird, and I feel as though I have no control over any of it. The "odd man out" login with the E favicon is the oldest by far, so it could be that Evernote updated its favicon in the interim.
If I had my druthers, I'd prefer that the Shelf icons for my Evernote logins be blue globes with little Evernote favicons in the lower right corner, much like my Gmail/Google/Google Apps logins. So that logins on the Shelf look like, you know, logins, rather than like software licenses. Less delicious, but more meaningful.
Speaking of which, if I look at my Gmail/Google/Google Apps logins in the Traditional layout, one or two have the red-on-white envelope Gmail favicon, many have the multi-hued Google favicon, and most have generic 1P login item icons. In Shelf view, these all appear as blue globes, with a favicon if one is present. Any idea what is going on here? I would love to be able to control which login items get which favicons, as this would give me a way to visually distinguish between standard Google logins in my keychain (username is full email address) from Google Apps logins (username omits domain name).Flag 0 -

Tommy was referring to a (possible) OpenDNS issue with accessing http://support.agilebits.com/. It was off-topic and therefore unrelated to downloading previews.
Automatic preview downloading is something we are working to resolve in a future 1Password 3.9.x update, though manually downloading should be working the current version.

Setting a custom image replaces both icon and preview.

To reset any Logins to the default favicon or apple-touch-icon provided by the site and its preview, right-click on the preview area and select "Clear Preview" and then "Download Preview".
1Password only uses the images provided by the site and has no control over this. Feel free to set a custom image if you like. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />Flag 0 -
I think 1Password does have control over this, and I have submitted a feature request to put that control in the hands of your users.
The program currently uses a blue globe Shelf icon for login items, adding a favicon.ico badge to the globe if one is available, except in cases where it finds an apple-touch-icon.png image to download, in which case 1Password will use the Apple Touch Icon as the Shelf logo. If there were a "Use Apple Touch Icons for Shelf icons if available" checkbox in the Logins preference pane, and if that preference were respected by Download Preview as well as for new logins, then unchecking that checkbox would give me 90% of what I'm looking for.
Before posting the feature request, I tried downloading the favicon.ico file from Evernote.com and dragging it into the Preview Image area of my oldest Evernote login. The hope was that this would change the entry's Shelf icon to a blue globe+favicon badge. Didn't work. Instead, a blurry blow-up of the favicon showed up in the Preview area AND on the Shelf. Download Preview reversed the damage, and also updated the entry's favicon in the Traditional and Widescreen layouts from the old E icon to the new Elephant-head icon.
While getting rid of Apple Touch Icons for logins is my main concern, in an ideal world I would also be able to replace the favicons of login entries with images of my own choice in the same way that I can do now with Preview images. This would give me control over which of my Google logins sport a Google favicon and which display a Gmail favicon.Flag 0 -
You guys obviously have many balls up in the air, but a checkbox that would tell 1Password whether or not to grab and use apple-touch-icon.png files seems like it shouldn't be too hard to add.
I do recognize, though, that these things aren't always as simple as they appear.Flag 0
