1Password Pro 3.5.8 Update Installation Hang on iPad

Just an FYI to report the issue:

I use 1Password Pro on my iPad (1st gen) and my iPhone 4. When I downloaded the 3.5.8 update from the app store, the iPhone installation went as expected. However, the iPad installation appeared to never finished. The icon showed "installing" for over 15 minutes. I could use other apps, and no other issues were noted.

Eventually, I turned off the iPad and rebooted. The 1Password icon was there, and when I checked the version, it was 3.5.8. In addition, all my logins, notes, etc. appeared to be available. I synched both mobile devices before installing the update, I completed another sync with the iPad and checked the history to see if anything was lost from the instal hang. Since the data file is separate from the program, I expected nothing would be updated, and it wasn't.

To repeat, once I rebooted the iPad, I had no problems. Hopefully, my experience was unique. Regardless, I wanted to pass it along.

Thanks for mentioning this, bswins. I have seen this happen a couple times with other apps as well. My understanding is that it is a problem in iOS and/or with the App Store since (as you mention) you were able to install 1Password Pro 3.5.8 on your iPhone without incident. Also, as I mentioned, I have witnessed the same with other apps. Offhand I can't say the cause, but since a restart solves the problem it may be related to low memory. (Restarting will free up all the memory the installation was trying to use but could not.)

Deleting the app and reinstalling it (after you have restarted the device) will likely behave as expected. In your case it sounds like reinstallation was not even necessary. Nice!

Just as a precaution, we do recommend that you always have a backup of your 1Password data before any and all updates to the app or the OS itself. You can backup manually each time, or, better yet, use Dropbox for automatic offsite backup (and syncing too). <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

Again, thank you bringing this up!

    khad,

Thanks for letting me know this has happened to you with other apps. Since nobody else had mentioned the hang, I was hesitant about posting the experience. However, I am truly a novice, so I don't have an ego to protect. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Since you mentioned the possibility of low memory as the culprit, I synched my iPad and then checked for a low memory log in /Users/xxxxxxxx/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/iPad. I saw many such logs, but none for the specific update time.

Regardless, I'm guessing your first thoughts of it being an iOS or App Store issue are the most likely (iPad = 4.3.1; iPhone = 4.2.6 (Verizon)). I downloaded the iPad and iPhone updates separately from the store over my home wi-fi, so each download was at a different time. I'll keep an eye installation hangs in the future and check for memory issues when it happens.

I appreciate your thoughts as to the possible cause(s). Perhaps I should purchase an iPad system monitoring app? I would love to know what the AWS team and other Forum members are using, but I believe that's a subject for the Lounge. I'll post a question over there.

    Thanks again for your reply.

On behalf of Khad, you are most welcome!

I am glad to hear that a restart solved the issue for you. For some reason I have been experiencing this a lot lately as well. It seems like since 4.3 came out. Maybe it's just a memory hog. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

As far as a system monitoring app, I am not sure that would be necessary -- or even possible, really. iOS doesn't exactly give apps unfettered access to system-level processes, and they can only access data from other apps on a very limited basis. I think a restart here and there might be fine. I could probably use a drink anyway. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

I'm glad you weren't shy about posting about the trouble you were having. Even if it turns out that 1Password isn't to blame, there's always a chance that others could be experiencing similar issues and could benefit from the dialogue as well. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
