Multiple and varying passwords

<div class="IPBDescription">Confused!</div>This is probably shows how really stupid I am and I'm not sure what happened. I now seem to have about seven different password for about seven different programs (Safari, iCal, Evernote, etc.) on my iMac and MacBook -- plus a different password to log in to the MacBook. Should I reinstall 1Password and start all over again? I've been very careful to backup my keychain. The only good thing is that the master password still works when I try to open the program itself.

    Welcome to the forums, Bujila!

We and other security-minded folks actually recommend using strong, unique passwords for everything. Password reuse is one of the most common weak spots for a thief or malicious hacker to exploit. In fact, 1Password is designed so that you can store all of your unique passwords for everything in one place and only need to remember one password. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

As long as you store the correct passwords in 1Password, you will always have them nearby. Perhaps I have misunderstood something, though. Please let me know if I have and if you could provide any more details about what sort of problem you are having with 1Password (if any).

You might want to take a look at our 3-Minute Expert Guide if you haven't already.

Sorry if I wasn't clear in my original post. I think that my problem originated when I tried to change the master password and ended up using all sorts of different ones. Now I have to remember about five different passwords before I can open individual programs. I have no problem opening 1Password itself, only when I want to access Safari or iCal and, worst of all, before I can login to my secondary computer, a MacBook. Should I trash 1Password entirely and start all over again -- having, of course, backed up the original files?

    Thanks for writing back, Bujila.

From your explanation, I don't think the problem is with 1Password and reinstalling it will not make a difference. 1Password doesn't directly interact with Mac applications other than web browsers (and I can't think of where iCal would be prompting for a password unless you are connecting to a CalDAV server in which case you can change your password on the CalDAV server).

While 1Password can store just about any credentials — it was designed for just such a purpose — at this time it unfortunately cannot fill in OS X login passwords, iCal passwords, or any other password that is not a web login. 1Password's autofill only works in the browser (which makes me wonder why you mention Safari as a problem). Did you change the passwords you mention and not record them in 1Password?

Perhaps you could post some screen shots of the password prompts you are seeing. I'm still struggling to figure out if you are having a problem with 1Password or something else. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_worried.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':S' />

I am still kind of scratching my head here. Please let me know. Thanks!

I'm sure that this forum hasn't room for 12 (!) screenshots of the 1Password problems I've had over the past couple of weeks but the most recent ones are iCal-1Password on the iMac and on the MacBook, "FileSyncAgent-"margot" keychain" and "Safari-login_renamed_2 keychain"

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks for posting those screen shots! What you are seeing is the Mac OS X keychain which is unrelated to 1Password 3 unfortunately. Can you tell me what version of 1Password you are using? It is possible there is a connection if you are using 1Password 2.

Thanks Khad. The versions on the two computers were different and I updated the old one-- but the problem hasn't gone away. I get the same error messages as I did before. Any suggestions? Should I reinstall?
Hi Bujila,

Are all of your data within 1Password 3 on your Mac? If yes, what you can do is open Finder and go to Home > LIbrary > Keychains. Move (do not delete) the 1Passwd.keychain file to your desktop. This will remove the 1Password keychain from your Keychain Access list.

Now, open Keychain Access.app which is located in the Applications > Utilities folder and then on top left under "Keychains", select "logins" and go to the File Menu and select "Make keychain login Default"

Please note that any applications that stored your passwords in that old 1Password keychain will now ask you again if you want to store your data within your "login" keychain. After this, if everything is working fine now, I'd suggest archiving your 1Passwd.keychain file. This file contains all of your old passwords from 1Password 2 including the applications' passwords, so you might have to go back into this keychain in the future.

Please let me know how it turns out.

Thanks Mike! Is that all I have to do or should I to switch to the Agile Keychain Format and then move the data to Dropbox? I've attached a jpg with the current keychains.

Thanks for the screen shot, Bujila! Could you tell me which version of 1Password you are currently using? If you are using 1Password 3, all your data is already in the Agile Keychain Format, and you can safely follow Mike's instructions above. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
