Using 1Password on iPHONE, Mac and PC

I recently completed the 1Password trial on my PC. I then purchased the 1Password app on my iPhone. Do i need to re-purchase the app for my PC or Mac as the trial has finished? or is there a way to start up the 1Password application on my PC, from the iPhone.

From the website info, it seems that the app on the iPhone is a standalone app and only if purchased on the PC first or Mac, can it be synchronised to use on the iPhone. But as i purchased it already on the iPhone FIRST, is there also a way to avoid purchasing the 1Password service again but on the PC or Mac.

PLEASE HELP!

Thanks

    Welcome to the forums, lulu!

    Thanks for purchasing 1Password for your iOS device. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

Unfortunately, since the iTunes App Store is a separate entity controlled by Apple, we can't control how applications are sold. If we could offer upgrades or bundles or discounts, we'd love to explore those options, but sadly, we can't do that at this time. We're sorry that we can't be more flexible regarding iOS app sales.

Giving 1Password away for free on additional platforms would certainly have made things simpler for everyone and it would have been a wonderful gift to give to all our users. It is something we put a lot of thought into and while thinking this through, we found that giving it away to be cost prohibitive.

The costs are high because the Mac, Windows, and iOS editions are separate products and we needed to completely rewrite the 1Password code base to make it work on each platform. But the costs don't stop with just development and the costs have gone up across the board: from design, marketing, website, documentation, coordination, and probably most of all, customer support. Because of this, we decided to charge for each version as they each cost a lot of time and money to make available.

One caveat that is often over-looked is our generous (we call it "sane") licensing mode. Many companies charge per computer (regardless of platform) which greatly increases the cost of ownership and this is not something we wanted to do. To make things as simple and fair as possible, we elected to license 1Password a per user, per platform basis. Having licenses associated with a person instead of a physical machine is more natural and, in our opinion, fair. This means you can use 1Password for Mac on as many Macs as you can afford and similarly for 1Password for Windows.

In the end, we decided that in order for 1Password to be a vibrant product going forward, it has to have a supporting business model. The last thing we would want to see is one version wither on the vine due to lack of financial support from users.

I'm sorry I couldn't give you the answer you were looking for, but I do hope you understand the reasons behind this. Thank you for your support of 1Password, we really do appreciate it.

P.S. I have also sent you a private message with a special offer if you are interested in purchasing a license for your desktop computer.
  • khad--

My guess is that most of the 1P user base approves of and appreciates your licensing policy. As a relatively new 1P user on all three platforms, I agree with Adam Christianson (MacCast) that 1P is "the bomb" and truly a "game changer." If your team keeps your shoulders to the wheel, we users will do our part by buying the licenses. That's a win/win for all concerned.

We do our best to create and support software that people really love, and it always helps to know when folks do. I will be sharing your post with the rest of the team.

    Thanks for making my day,
