Feature Request: File attachments in iOS apps

That's certainly one option we could explore, there are lots of options available to us, we just need to find the right one and then test this properly. We're not saying no to adding attachment support, but we can't promise any timeframe for when it will be available, we'd much rather under-promise and over-deliver than say 'Oh, it'll be done next week' and it turns that out that it can't be done by next week.

Add my vote for the attachment functionality on the mobile 1Password.



Here are my 2¢:

1. on the desktop app, add a flag for whether or not an attachment should be sync'd to mobile devices;

2. on the mobile app, include a "link" to download individual attachments and set the flag to keep the specified attachment sync'd.

3. limit the file types that can be viewed, if necessary.



Keep up the great work! 1Password is indispensable.

I use dropbox to synch my 1Password agilekeychain between my Mac and my Iphone 4. Everything synchs fine except for files. None of them appear on my iPhone.



So I have an item, say software xyz, it will show all information on the iPhone app but the file is not shown. On my Mac the file is there. How do I fix this?



I also have a dropbox app on my iphone as well as my Mac. The folder sync works fine, too. Is there a synch conflict?

I am sorry for the confusion. At this time 1Password for iOS devices does not support file attachments. Performance is a concern, for both data transfer and decryption. This is something we may add in the future, but for the time being these are not supported on that platform. But rest assured: Your files are still there in your keychain on Dropbox. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I was wondering if anybody knows if there is any way that the file attachments associated with items/accounts on the PC can be accessed via one's iPhone. It looks to me like there is no way to do this but I thought I'd just ask in case I'm missing something. If it is the case that these attachments cannot be accessed, I'm pretty disappointed!

Hello David and welcome to the Forums!



At this time, files are not synched to 1P's iOS platforms. I do not know all the underlying reasons for this, but I am sure that AB knows people would like the functionality and will add it when, and if, it is practicle and safe from a software coding standpoint.

Wow. Just merged 4 threads into this one. I think it is safe to say that this is a popular feature request. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />



We have been hard at work with Dropbox syncing, Chrome support, Firefox 4 support, Lion support, a new data format, and more. This has not been forgotten, but I can't give an ETA at the moment.

While we would certainly like to add this in a future version, there are a number of reasons we haven't implemented this. Just to name a few:

[list][*][b]Data usage[/b]: Back when data was unlimited, we didn't have (even limited) background processing; now we have to be sensitive to bandwidth caps as well.[*][b]Battery life[/b]: Whether on Wi-Fi or 3G, sync'ing large files is a huge drain, even on new hardware. We need to be sure that we don't kill any of the benefits of having a mobile device by keeping to plugged in to charge more frequently. Attachments or not, it won't matter if your battery is dead.[*][b]File types[/b]: Having attachments isn't much good if you can't do anything with them on the device itself. We would either have to build in support or try...[*][b]File sharing[/b]: iOS really limits what apps can do in this regard. Want to open a document in another app or transfer it to another device? There is a lot that would have to be done to make attachments even remotely useful on a mobile device.[/list]

There are plenty more reasons, but that's off the top of my head. We are constantly exploring our options. iCloud may end up solving some of these, and iOS5 isn't finished yet...but only time will tell. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I understand some of the main arguments are band-width and file types. I would be happy right now if the synch was limited to pictures (jpegs and other well-known iOS graphic types). This would allow passport pix, driver's licenses, etc. to work. From reading this forum, those appear to be the most desired items.

Having that kind of granular control would be nice, but it would also be a pain to manage. File attachments on iOS have been requested for years. Vague commitment to the idea has been the only answer up to now. Agile's engineers should have been able to come up with a solution by now.



Evernote provides an easy granularity of what gets cached on the iOS device and seems to handle attachments supported by the OS just fine.



SplashID has supported attachments for quite some time, as well, and the solution is a perfectly good one.



"Naseous"? There are no layers to sync mgt currently, other than turning it on. I strongly disagree that granular control is a pain to manage. There is nothing wrong with implementing an "advanced" option to turn granular syncing on/off, if you want to limit the exposure of the feature.



I do agree that a solution needs to be good, but at this point, how much more time does Agile need, when proven solutions (e.g., Evernote and SplashID) have been around for years now?



The world is going (already has gone?!) mobile, and 1Password needs to have more focus on extending it's feature set to mobile platforms.

We're not ruling out attachment syncing, and it's very much still on our radar or features to add for the future, but in general we never promise a timeframe for when we'll have a specific feature available.



While I can't say anything more right now, iCloud's announcement may make attachment syncing easier to implement, though that's for our developers to investigate. I don't know enough about how SplashID or Evernote handle attachments to comment on their solutions.



I do agree that things are going mobile, you just have to look at what iOS 5 will bring in that regard, and we've got some truly great plans to make 1Password fit into this new eco-system, but there's a lot to work on before we're ready to start sharing the goodies.
