Possible Feature Request: Replace password only

JudiS217

Apologies if this feature already exists or has been requested. I skimmed the forums and I didn't see this suggested by anyone else/addressed.

This is a very common scenario:

I log in to a website that I've visited many times in the past. My password has auto-expired and I'm prompted to select a new password. I use 1Password's Generator to create a new complex password and fill in the fields. When I save I am prompted to either save a new login or replace an existing one. Usually, I'll opt to replace the old login but when I do this, my username is now removed and all that is typically saved is are the new password and confirmation password fields and I have to go back and edit the record to add back in my username for future logins.

I would love to see an option on the dialog that pops up to create/replace that recognizes that this is only a password update and gives an option to "replace Password only" leaving the other fields on the record intact (and also saves the password history this way).

Once again, my deepest apologies if either this functionality already exists (please point me in the right direction) or it has already been mentioned.

Thanks!!

  • Hiya, Judi!

1Password does, in fact, have this functionality, but it sounds like it isn't working properly for you. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

When you log in to a website and change your password, 1Password should pop up a window that looks like this and offer to save the new one:

If the correct Login item is selected, you can simply click Update and it will save the new password, leaving the rest of the data in the Login item alone.

If this is not coming up for you, would you mind sharing the URL for the website in question? We should look into this. Granted, sometimes there just isn't anything we can do.

For example, the Citibank page where I changed my password did all of this in-line, so 1Password wasn't even aware it was being updated. I could still manually call up the Strong Password Generator, but once I had used it to create and save a new password on the site, I had to paste it into my Login item in 1Password manually before it was removed from the clipboard (1Password copies the generated password automatically if you select that option, but by default anything it copies to the clipboard is cleared after 90 seconds unless you change this under Preferences > Security.)

I really hope that sites like that are the minority and not on the rise. I haven't run into many myself, but this could be a real problem. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. Hopefully this answers your question at least, and maybe we can some up with a good solution for things like this. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I am sorry to say that it does not...yet.

The short version is, you can trust the 1Password prompt: If it offers to "Update" a Login item, this works as expected; however, if it asks to "Replace" a Login item, it will do exactly what it says, essentially overwriting the existing Login in place. I believe this is what Judi ran into. This can be useful when you have a broken Login item that you want to refresh, but otherwise it probably isn't a fun thing if you were expecting something else. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

The good news is, both the Login Update compatibility and the Chrome extension in general are high on our list. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Ah. Well that explains it. I've been using Chrome for so long now I forgot how it works it in other browsers. Thanks for the update. I hope this functionality is implemented soon. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

Ah, Judi! I am sorry for the confusion. I guess neither of us were on the same page as far as browsers. I use the Browser Trinity myself (Safari, Firefox, and Chrome -- there are, of course, others, but...) so I am kind of all over the place. I tend to default to "Safari Mode" though, unless another is specified. We will keep you posted! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />
