ssh key storage in secure notes

<div class="IPBDescription">Secure notes are a great place to store these, but there are some issu</div>I'm trying out 1Password. So far, a welcome breath of fresh air.

I have one problem, and that is with storing SSH public and private keys as secure notes. While this apparently stores the information correctly, when you copy the keys to your clipboard, line breaks are inserted (usually at slash characters) rendering the keys unusable unless you manually attempt to reformat them. Since these keys are really a jumbled mess of characters, it is often not easy (especially when you really NEED the key) to find a way to edit it and attempt to correct the word wrap.

Interestingly, when synced with the iPad, they keys are cut-and-pasted exactly right when you extract them and use them in another application.

So, it appears that while they key data is stored correctly, the word-wrap "presentation" is causing the newlines to be inserted when you attempt to extract them under OSX.

Is there a simple workaround for this that preserves the integrity of the keys?

    Welcome, Gary!

I couldn't reproduce your problem by first copy/pasting the contents of ~/.ssh./authorized_keys (a single 1116 character line) into the Notes field of a new 1P Secure Note, then selecting/copying that Notes text and pasting it into a Plain Text TextEdit window. The result was a single unwrapped line. Then I duplicated the line in the Secure Note a couple times and the results of selection/copy/paste was three unwrapped lines.

A few questions that might help isolate the wrapping trouble you're getting:

    • How large is the Notes field you're copying?

    • Got a specific example of where you see the line breaks in the clipboard copy?

    • Are you running any clipboard manager? I'm running PTHPasteboard PRO, which doesn't seem to matter.

I'll wait for that info before doing more testing (e.g. with a larger Notes field and PP disabled) if you still need help figure this out. Thanks!

Update: Still no luck reproducing this with a 18201 character known_hosts file as the Notes field content. Maybe I'm overlooking something that someone else knows. Or am I simply misunderstanding your problem?

    Hiya, Gary! Welcome to the forums! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I am sorry that you are having this issue. Like sjk, I was not able to reproduce this myself either. Do you perhaps have a clipboard manager of some kind running that might be mucking with the copy operation? It is also possible that whatever you are pasting it into might not be playing fair.

Fun fact: I often use the complete text of In the Beginning Was the Command Line by Neil Stephenson pasted into a Secure Note for testing these sorts of things. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
