Knox accessing Time Capsule at a regular interval
protagonistic
Junior Member ✭
Why is knox accessing my Time Capsule every three seconds? Every time I start Knox up it will continually access the Time Capsule every three seconds until I close it out. The network traffic is both in and out.
Addition: I wanted to add the traffic is strictly internal. The program does not appear to be phoning home.

Ummm, because it loves to see what cool hardware you have on your system? ;) Actually this is something we're looking into now to see why the polling is occurring. Thanks for letting us know you're seeing it.

The only "phoning home" this application does is for version checking.Flag 0 -

Thanks for the prompt reply. Call me paranoid, but it makes me nervous when I see something like this. :-D So far I like the program but for now I will fire it up when I need it instead of leaving it running.Flag 0 -

Thank you, protagonistic.
It's perfectly reasonable, and not particularly paranoid, to be concerned when some security software triggers inexplicable behavior. But let me assure you that there is nothing sinister here.
Although I'll have to leave the details to the developers, Knox is a tool that, among other things, manages disk images. As such it can have a legitimate interest in what disk volumes or things that can hold volumes are attached. This isn't limited to your Time Capsule, but if you have a USB device HDD physically connected to your computer, Knox will occasionally poll it, causing it to spin-up even if it is not mounted.
We are trying to determine if all of this polling is necessary, and if not how we can tune things better. But please note that none of your data is being read from those devices during this polling. Knox is just trying to get a sense of what devices and potential volumes are connected as part of its disk image and volume management duties.
I hope this helps give you an idea of what's going on. And please do feel free to express any concerns. We'd much prefer to have the opportunity to address even "paranoid" concerns openly than have people silently feel uneasy.
So thank you again, protagonistic for raising this.
Cheers,

I thought about that, but the strange thing is I have a FW RAID array and a 400GB FW drive attached to the FW800 port and it does not seem to be polling them. I get no indication on the status lights that these drives are being accessed. Or would the polling actually access the drives? I didn't think it was anything sinister, I just like to know what is going on in my system and why. :-) Anyway, I appreciate you taking the time to respond to this. Thanks again.Flag 0
