Storing data file in a subfolder of Dropbox

I keep my 1Password.agilekeychain in my Dropbox and although Dropbox has offered Selective Sync for a while, now, I'd already been using Dropbox for so long, that most of the 50+ GB of data I keep there is in the root level, not in sufolder. This makes using Selective Sync difficult at best, because it means actually organizing the hundreds of flat files in the root level since Selective Sync only allows you to specify SUBfolder within Dropbox to be synced, while everything in the root level gets automatically included. That's a bad thing since I often only need a few of those files synced to other computers and there's no way for me to exclude them without moving them into other folders. That's a complaint for them, obviously, not you guys, but it relates to my questions -- if I bite the bullet and get all my loose files out of the root of Dropbox and drop them into folders so that I can use the Selective Sync feature, can I place the 1Password.agilekeychain into it's own folder as well without doing any harm to all of the other clients I have connecting to it (Android, iPad and iPhone clients, which also pull my 1Password data from Dropbox). In other words - if I store 1Password.agilekeychain at > Dropbox > 1Pass ƒ > 1Password.agilekeychain so that I can selectively sync ONLY "1Pass ƒ", and point my primary desktop client to that file, will the iPhone and Android clients detect the change or is there a process for updating the location in those mobile apps as well? I don't have my Android device or my iPhone/iPad with me at the moment (i'm primarily a Blackberry user but 1Password doesn't give any love to BB users <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> ), but I don't recall there being any preference to set anything other than "use keychain in Dropbox" not a place to actually navigate to where inside Dropbox the 1Password.agilekeychain file resides.

Thanks!

Move your data file in dropbox, you can either use the finder and move it yourself OR use the move feature in 1P if you use the move feature only use this on one Mac and then follow the procedure below. For me it is easier to move it via Finder and then double click on it from the get go.

    Moved via Finder:

    Double click on the keychain,

1P will ask if you want to switch to this keychain

    click yes

Then repeat the click answer yes on all macs using the same keychain etc

Once you do this 1Password should update the pointer file to indicate the new location. This pointer file resides in the root of your Dropbox, once its updated the syncing should occur without any problems. This pointer file is hidden by default.

Thanks - I know how to move it (i prefer the Finder method as well), I just wasn't sure how the MOBILE clients (Android/iPhone/iPad) would react if I moved it. But your mention of the invisible pointer file may be the answer to that question? If the mobile clients look to the pointer file, then I suppose it will all work as expected.

Absolutely. You just need to open 1Password on your desktop at least once so it can detect the new location and rewrite the pointer file so the mobile apps know where to look. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

  • Hi. I am new to 1password3. I have seen here that many people make a subfolder in their dropbox for their 1password stuff. why? and should i do that? is that because every sync becomes another file in dropbox and so having a subfolder would keep them all together? if that's true, can i just make a new folder in dropbox via the finder and drag the key chain in there? is that all there is to it? i'm a little nervous about messing with that keychain file since last night somehow i deleted all of my info and had to start all over, after spending several hours putting stuff in there.

    thanks.

    Hey robinzd,

As I mentioned in our other conversation, I'm not a Dropbox pro, but I do remember seeing the following thread discussing moving 1P to a subfolder in Dropbox: Moving 1P sync file to subfolder

Until someone more knowledgable responds, the linked discussion should give you some ideas.

It is personal preference. I store my data file in a subfolder of a subfolder so it is really "out of the way." There isn't any reason to work with it directly, so as long as 1Password knows where to find it, you can bury it deep if that helps you organize your files.
is that because every sync becomes another file in dropbox and so having a subfolder would keep them all together?
Nope. This is not the case. All your data is stored in 1Password.agilekeychain which shows up as a single file (a bundle) on the Mac and a folder in Windows. You should never move or delete anything inside it but 1Password.agilekeychain itself can be moved anywhere within your Dropbox folder.
can i just make a new folder in dropbox via the finder and drag the key chain in there? is that all there is to it?
Certainly. Just make sure you let 1Password know where you have moved the data file by double-clicking from within its new subfolder in your Dropbox folder. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />

You should be able to restore from one of the backups that 1Password automatically creates (File > Restore Data File from Backup) if you were using it long enough for one to be created. It wouldn't hurt to check. In the future, these backups will be created automatically every day when a change has been made to your 1Password data. It is one of the many "safety" features included in 1Password to protect your data. Syncing with Dropbox is another great way to have an offsite backup of your data file.
