Restoring from Dropbox

<div class="IPBDescription">How to recover from hard drive failure</div>I had a catastrophic hard drive failure on my MAC computer. I use Chrome for my browser. I do have a Drop Box, but really do not understand all about it. Yes I have watched the videos, just an old senior finding this hard.

Anyway, in my drop box I put the back up (I think) of 1Password. I now have a new hard drive and have 1Pasword up and running, How can I get the info from Drop box to snyc with the one on my MAC. Some of this data will be outdated as I did't have the auto sync thing happening but most will be OK, better than starting all over.

Any help in this will be greatly appreciated.

I am a senior so if you could spell out each step.

Thank you very much in advance.

phil

OK someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly. However for starters do you have the email address and password for your DropBox account? If you don't then you are hosed. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

Assuming you do, the best way to start might be to use Safari and login to your Dropbox Account at: https//www.dropbox.com In the top right corner you will see "login" Click on that and enter your email address and password. That should take you to your account where you will see the files in your DropBox listed.

Select 1-Password by clicking in the box at the left of the filename. This should highlight the filename and if you look a small arrow will appear at the right end of the row. Click on the arrow and a menu should appear. Click download and this should download your 1-Password keychain to your current downloads folder.

Note that a copy of the 1-PW keychain will remain in the DropBox, but at least you should have a usable file to get you going. Once you have this, go to: Library -> Application Support -> 1-Password You will see the keychain file. Make sure 1-PW is not running and move the file (keychain) you have just downloaded into this folder. If you then restart 1-PW you should find your original keychain is now recognised.

If you get this far we can then possibly move to set up DropBox on the new hard drive.

Welcome to the forums, Phil. I am really sorry to hear about your hard drive failure. It sounds like you were prepared though, storing your 1Password data file in Dropbox.

Tacitus99 has suggested some things which may be helpful, but I think if you perform the following steps in their entriety you will be back up and running one hundred percent.

If you have any data in your new installation of 1Password that you wish to keep, please export it to a 1Password Interchange File (File > Export All > 1Password Interchange File). As the warning states, please be very careful with the 1PIF export as it is not encrypted. You will want to securely delete it once it has been imported into your data file in Dropbox. I will cover that at the end.

Download and install Dropbox. You can reset your Dropbox password on their website if you do not know it. If you do not have access to your email account (where the password reset instructions will be sent), you will need to contact your email provider. Gmail has a great password recovery process, but you will need to contact your specific provider if you are not using Gmail.

Once you have installed Dropbox on your Mac (and it has finished syncing), launching 1Password should automatically detect your data file in the Dropbox folder. If not, you can open Finder and double-click your data file in your Dropbox folder to open it. 1Password will prompt you to use it. Click the "Yes" button.

Once you have verified all your previous 1Password data, you can import the 1PIF you exported earlier (File > Import > 1Password Interchange File). If everything imported successfully, you can securely delete the 1PIF export file. Your data will continue to sync with Dropbox should anything bad ever happen again. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

Please let me know how it turns out or if you have any questions. If you are stuck, please let me know precisely where in the process in order that I might best assist you further.

    Cheers,
