Transfer 1P from old iPad1 to new iPad 2

I am using 1P on PowerMac, iPhone 3Gs and iPad 1 via Dropbox. Works great, no problems...

I just got a new iPAD 2 and plan to disable the old one (ebay) and transfer everything I have to the new iPAD 2 (Apps, Data, Settings, Licenses, whatever). That should normally be a routine thing.

The iPAD User Manual tells me I could do that via itunes backup-restore:

For the old iPad: Restore OS4 would restore the OS, delete all Apps/data and reset everything to factory settings.

Then for the new iPAD: Transfer all data via restoring fro a backup of the old iPAD.

I want to make sure I am not doing anything wrong, therefore this thread.

What happens with the 1Password App/ licence ( I bought "1Password pro" for my iPhone and the old iPAD)?

Is the above way correct to transfer the App and License to the new iPad (the data are in the Dropbox anyway)?

Do I need to delete 1P on the old iPad before I start anything?

Do I have to reconfigure 1P on the new iPad or is it going to work right away.

Thanks fo your help

Bernhard from Germany

    Hallo Bernhard,

It is always better to be safe than sorry. I am glad you are asking these questions. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

First of all, congratulations on your new iPad 2! I think you will love it. The lighter weight alone is worth it to me, not to mention the front-facing camera for FaceTime. Very nice.

That is exactly what I would do. Your 1Password data may not be carried over, but this is okay as long as you already have Dropbox syncing set up. Just be sure to let 1Password finish Dropbox syncing one last time on your old iPad before you decommission it, just in case there is anything that you have input on the iPad that is not yet in Dropbox.

If you are still using the same iTunes account that you used to purchase the app originally, you will be able to re-download the current version for free if for some reason it doesn't make it over in the restore. Unfortunately, it won't look like it's free until you choose to "buy" it and enter your password. You don't have to take our word for it though. Here is Apple's official support document:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519

Another thing you can do to make sure that you won't have to pay for the app again is to try adding it to your Wish List in iTunes. If you already own the app, iTunes will tell you, "You have already purchased this item" and that you cannot add it to your Wish List.

Apple will never charge you twice for the same app in the App Store. Once you purchase it, it is yours.

    Precisely.

If you have both iPads at the same time, you could verify the data on the new one before wiping your old iPad, but wiping the device will also wipe your 1Password data. There is no need to take special measures with your 1Password data.

I have heard mixed reports. You may need to set up a new master password (you can use the same one you were using on your original iPad), but once you set up Dropbox syncing (if needed) all your data will be in 1Password on your new device.

This is the beauty of Dropbox syncing. Even if you lose your iPhone, iPad, and Mac, you can simply reinstall 1Password on another computer or device and have all your data thanks to Dropbox.Hello Bernhard,

  • I performed everything as you recommended and it all worked great with no problem.

Amazing thing: All Apps and Settings incl 1Password have been transferred, even the 9 open windows of Safari from the old ipad at the time I made the last synch (or backup) were available on the new iPad right away. The only App which gave me trouble was Mail, I had to manually reenter the config+pwd´s again then it worked (don´t care about why).

Another amazing thing: Your Support. It´s just great to get help within almost minutes (!!!) even during the weekend.

I will continue to recommend 1Password to my friends.

    Aw. Thanks, Bernhard! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_bigsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-D' />

I am glad everything is working well.

If you run into any syncing trouble down the road, you can always reset Dropbox syncing from within 1Password (Settings > Sync > Dropbox > Account > Reset). It seems that for some folks syncing looks like it is working after an iTunes restore when in fact it is not. That may only apply to Wi-Fi syncing or it may only apply in certain circumstances — I can never tell — but I just thought I would mention it.

If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

  • Indeed I ran into that problem but noticed only after a day or so.

I fixed that prior to reading your last post by switching to WiFi Synch and then back to Dropbox synch - then it worked. I assume that switching did the same as the reset you recommended - well, if that problem is reproducible why don´t you give some homework to your programmers...(but that is not a high prio)

    Thanks again for your support.

My iPad shipped with iOS 3.x. When I updated to GoodReader 3.6.1, I read where I needed to perform a full restore to iOS 4.x In order to enable Data Protection.

After the restore, my 1P Pro data was available, and Dropbox synching appeared to work. However, after making a couple of changes on 1P for Mac, I noticed that 1P Pro was not updating. I was preparing to reset Dropbox (as Khad describes above), but first decided to try WiFi.

The first WiFi attempt worked, and all my 1P for Mac changes were reflected on my iPad. Then, as Bernhard did, I switched back to Dropbox synching, and since then, everything has worked as it did before the full restore. As 1P Pro / Dropbox synching on my iPhone worked as expected during this event, I presume the iOS full restore was the cause of the hiccup.

Since few people have reported this problem, I wanted to relay the specific details of my experience. Don't know if it's expected behavior or an iOS bug, but it seems to be caused on Apple's side of the code fence.

    Thanks for the updates, folks.

I have passed this along to the developers for consideration in a future update. I'm not sure that there is any way for us to detect whether the app has been restored from an iTunes backup or not (since it is designed to restore fully and look like nothing has changed).

We will see what can be done here.
