Syncing to iPad for previous iPhone users

<div class="IPBDescription">It looks like it's working without specific setup for the new devi</div>Hi everyone <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

(This is my first-ever forum post from my shiny new iPad2, so please excuse any on-screen keyboard clumsiness.)

I'm a long-time user of 1Password on Mac and iPhone: long enough, it seems, to forget about the code-word setup for a new device syncing with the desktop.

When I got my iPad, I iTunes-synced it with my iPhone apps etc. So 1Password (among others) appeared on my iPad, with all my data. I checked its prefs, and WiFi sync was active. So I just went on with things.

However, I started to discover discrepancies between 1Password data on my Mac and on my iPad (outdated logins). I checked the sync settings again, and the history said "6 minutes ago", "1 day ago" etc. The sync logs showed connection, handshaking and disconnection with my Mac. "???" I thought eloquently.

So I checked the 1Password User Guide, which reminded me that each syncing device should show up under "Sync" in the navbar (NOT "bs bar" as autocorrect insultingly insists) of the desktop app. I checked 1Password on my Mac, and under "Sync" there were only two iPhones (my old 3G and my current iPhone4). I deleted the old 3G.

The User Guide reminded me that we do have to authenticate each new device manually. I forgot that, and others might do the same in the same situation (transferring iOS data to a new device).

The Settings will still tell you that WiFi is ON, and the logs make it look like something is happening, but they should also show actual syncing. If they don't, and if your device doesn't show up under "Sync" in the desktop app, then turn WiFi OFF.

Turn it ON again. This time it isn't just using your old device settings. This time it will show you authorization codes to link this device with your desktop app. If you look at the desktop app, it should show the authentication window for this device. In my case, 1Password for Mac correctly showed an authorization window for iPad (not the iPhone from which the settings had been copied in first iTunes-sync).

I put in the authorization codes, and a lot of syncing occurred. This time, the sync log showed actual syncing and updating. You also get to tell the desktop app which records are newer.

It might be useful if when updating 1Password to a new device, we saw a window saying something like "You have just transferred your 1Password data to a new device. Do you want to sync with 1Password on a desktop computer?" with Yes and Not Now buttons. In any case, maybe the syncing options should be disabled when the data is moved to a different device. That would avoid the assumption that things are working when they aren't, and make it obvious what you have to do to get them working (enable the options you want, and follow the authorization steps).

(I hope I'm not duplicating another topic: I did search, but the forums told me I was using inappropriate short words, which I don't think I was, e.g. "Mac sync to iPad". No search results were shown. Problem with input from iPad?)

Thanks as always for your awesome software. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Thanks for posting this, Clytie, and congratulations on your new iPad 2! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_bigsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-D' />

From a technical standpoint, I'm not sure what we can do here since iTunes is "in charge of" its own backups and their restoration which can cause unexpected effects in some apps. The way iTunes restores the app essentially leaves no indication that it was "restored" and may need to have syncing reset as far as I know. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_worried.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':S' />

Personally, I prefer to start fresh because I never trust iTunes restoration, but I will certainly pass this along to the developers!

I also want to mention that we now offer a method of syncing that is fully automatic, does not require you to even be near your computer, and is our recommended method of securely syncing.

With Dropbox syncing, you can keep 1Password up to date from across town or across the country — anywhere you have an Internet connection. You Mac doesn't even have to be turned on!

You might consider going with Dropbox syncing. It can be more robust and once you have your data file stored in Dropbox, it is simple matter of flipping a switch and logging in rather than entering authentication codes on your Mac. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

If you would prefer to stick with manually syncing via Wi-Fi, by all means please continue to do so. And if we can be of further assistance, please let us know. We are always here to help!
