Suggestion Allow UI customization + MobileMe syncing

I love the program, but the new interface says "MS Windows" all over it:-

- Fonts are unnecesarily large

- The entire window is too large, and not able to be resized smaller

- The main subwindow window for login accounts is a huge waste of space, even in "traditional" layout mode

- The main window is unnecessarily garish with too many colors, too little information. Visually it comes across as just clutter.

- Please, please give the option to control some of this clutter in the UI.

The lack of MobileMe syncing is pretty inconvenient. How many sync actions and accounts (a la DropBox) should users have to have?

Thank you in advance for your kind assistance.

Thanks for the feedback, Randall. I don't believe we have plans to allow UI customisation beyond the three layouts we already offer, but we do appreciate your input.

Your reply has caused me to downgrade our copies to 1Password 2. I disabled all interaction with the Safari browser to avoid the 32-bit trap.

This is a good security program; it should be more discrete. I would rather have to do a bit of cut and paste than broadcast to everyone behind me on the train, plane or office know what bank accounts, logins, etc. I have.

The traditional layout is fine; I just do not see the need for 60 point fonts and dead space in the detail window. A plain-text option (with a return to the lower-contrast fonts) in the Traditional layout would be higher security.

Those who do't care aout broadcasting their personal life info could use the large tex and icons.

    Thanks for listening.

I am sorry to hear you want to go back to V2 you do know that you can change the view in 1P V3 to something similar to v2.

Also webdav syncing is coming in the future, sorry I cannot give a time frame but the guys dont openly comment on release dates etc.

If you want it discreet then try what I do at times, change the view to traditional, from the 1P menu>view>layout.

Then I drag the window as far to the bottom as possible.

The lower window will still scroll and reveal only about 1 line of text etc.

In the screen shot you will see my entry for bonjour mounter, and in the second you will see where I scrolled to the tags section.

    Hightower:

I certainly appreciate your prompt replies to my comments. I guess I am "old school"; the availability of more screen real estate does not mean we need to fill it, especially if doing so competes with the app's purpose. Although it is truly old school to refer to Apple's UI guidelines, three in particular apply here:

•The font size and type should be consistent within a window.

•Keep graphics simple, and use them only when they truly enhance usability.

•Simplicity. Although there may be myriad optional details associated with a given task, the basic components should not have to compete with the details for the user’s attention.

BTW, I immediately selected the "traditional view", and tried using the window split for hiding, etc. But then the functionality of 1Password is messed up by a lot of scrolling.

But, again, thank for listening, anyway.

Thanks for the reply and your input. The guys love to hear what will make 1p better.

I just volunteer my time here and help out but the guys do participate in the forums and I am sure one of them will read through your post. Given the time of the year, I suspect most folks will be winding down and getting travel plans finalized etc etc etc.

This thread is buried in the 3.0 Early Access forum, which isn't accessible to searching, so I don't expect that you've seen it. During the beta process we had a lot of discussion about the 3.0 UI and users' various tastes and preferences. The widescreen layout came out of that discussion as did some other tweaks, so we're note averse to change, but the UI as it is has been in development for well over a year and at this point, I don't think it's going to change significantly or gain any kind of alternate theming at least for the foreseeable future.

I second (or third) this request. Please make the UI cleaner and smaller. The large fonts and huge windows are also a bit of security risk because windows are visible from across the room.

Yes, it's an old thread, but I just had to comment.

    - If your passwords can be seen from across the room, perhaps you should choose Conceal Passwords from the View menu.

    - If your credentials at 12-points and 11-points are too large, then perhaps you should choose a higher screen resolution.

    - The window can be resized (OMM) to 800x540

Generally speaking, as a middle-aged, glasses-wearing 1P user, I appreciate the larger fonts used in 1P3. I can read the smaller text in most apps, but as monitor resolutions -- particularly on laptops -- increase, that text gets more difficult for all users to read.

What really gets my goat, besides the gratuitous MS Windows aside, is this comment by Randall, though:
Those who do't care aout broadcasting their personal life info could use the large tex and icons.
I don't know why Randall's spending so much time in the app, anyway, especially in front of other people. I spend -- at most -- about five minutes a week in 1P, even though I use it continually through the browser plug-ins.

These are good points, and we appreciate your response. However, keep in mind that different users have different use cases. Some people use 1Password mostly for data retrieval as Randall indicated by the fact that he could live without Safari integration. In those cases, it can be hard to access data in a discreet manner. I'm not sure what the solution is, but I can see why some users would have a problem with 1Password's current interface.

Thanks for the feedback and encouragement!
  • While this is an older and surely touchy topic for people, I feel so strongly about it that I created an account just to post this.

I completely agree that the new (granted it's been out for a while now) interface is unnecessarily obtrusive, large, garish, whatever other words you want to use to describe it. The bottom line is, compared to other applications, and even to older 1Password interfaces, this app simply wastes a lot of space. I appreciate the authors intent (whether intentional or accidental) to make the interface more modern/fancy/whatever by giving it all these shiny, glossy, and clunky design elements, but it comes across similar to a lot of early "web 2.0" websites where the designers had just learned how to do a lot of cool new tricks and used them all just because they knew how.

I also understand that a lot of time, effort, and discussion went into the new interface and that everyone has different priorities - but please keep everyone's interests in mind by allowing some customizability. Also, I feel the suggestion to never forget Apple's design principles is a good suggestion and should be considered by all developers.

To provide some concrete ideas for improvement, I would suggest the following:

    - Allow users to customize the font sizes used throughout the app, including both the Vault/Folder listing pane and the item list pane

    - Remove the dark gray background surrounding the detail pane

    - Scale down the blue background behind the title in the detail pane (and again, either shrink the fonts or allow user customization)

These are just a few ideas but I feel they would dramatically improve the interface.

Here is a mockup in traditional view (with before and after). The other 2 views are even more obtrusive.
