My heart stopped!

Tried to sign into a web site just now, but 1PW said there was no saved password for the site. I knew that couldn't be right, so I went to the "Go & Fill Login" prompt, and saw not my usual 50+ logins there, but only 7! Seven logins instead of the normal 50! I thought I was toast, but coincidentally I had JUST put the 1PW key chain onto a thumb drive - for no particular reason - and used it to replace the one I keep in the dropbox folder. It took about another minute, and the complete key chain reappeared. Whew!

This is a brand new computer, as of today, so my time machine may or may not have had the "good" keychain in it. The complete keychain did indeed make the transfer onto the new computer, and I'd been using it all day when this suddenly happened.

I'm sure this is somehow my fault, but WHAT THE HECK WOULD I HAVE DONE if not for that thumb drive?

By the way, because of this experience, I'll keep a thumb drive backup of my keychain from now on. I think this is true, but the 1PW keychain password resides with the keychain, right?

  • Hi Kagy,

Yikes, that must have been a scary experience, and I'm sorry you had to go through it. A lot of times, no-one is to blame, sadly computers aren't always as reliable as they should be.

Without knowing more of what happened it's difficult to say what exactly went wrong, but I'm very glad to hear you did have a backup.

I wonder if the Dropbox sync had not fully completed, remember that because your 1Password.agilekeychain file is a package, rather than just one file, you may not have seen all your items available to you as they may not have fully synced, particularly if Dropbox was still performing it's first sync on this new system.

To answer your last question though, yes your password is associated with the 1Password.agilekeychain file itself, though it's not accessible in plain-text, which would be a very bad design choice if it were.

    I hope that helps,

Thanks Stu. For extra security, I keep the 1Password.agilekeychain file on a thumb drive that is itself a Knox encrypted drive! That should do it!
