Help - Vault name disappeared, files cannot be open anymore!!
I have a very serious problem! I installed Knox as demo some days ago and created a vault - copied all files into it and it worked fine until this morning.
Suddenly I cannot open the files anymore which are in the Vault. The Vault was still in the site bar of the finder but when I looked in the preferences the Vault was gone!! And if I want to open any of this files I cannot open them anymore - message appears that the files are corrupted.
For me it looks like that they are all encrypted now and I cannot access them anymore because the Vault doesn't exist. So what do I have to do!

As additional information:
A .sparsebundle file is located on my hard drive. But when I want to open the image file a window appears with the error message: Image cannot be open, reason unknown (translated from German)

Halo Klaus. Willkommen auf den Foren! (hope I got that right! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />)
I'm sorry your having this problem. I am not a Knox expert, but I have experienced your situation before.
My solution was to restore a backup of my .sparsebundle file. If you've created a backup(s), it's worth a try.
To do this, go to:
1. Knox>Preference>Backups
2. Select "Restore Vaults".
3. You should see a list of backups in the window. Chose one and select "Restore Selected Backup"
If you do not see any backups listed, try searching with Spotlight or another file finder program looking for ".sparsebundle".
If you find backup files, repeat steps 1 and 2, but select "Manually" from the Restore window. You can then go to the file location and select it.
I hope this works for you, but please reply and let us know. If the Restore process does not work, or if you don't have any backups with which to try it, I'm hoping someone else will have an idea for you.
Cheers!
Brandt

I just remembered another method I used to recover a "corrupt" Knox Vault.
I mounted the .sparsebundle using Mac's Disk Utility and clicked "Repair Disk". It worked for me.
You may wish to try this method before restoring from a backup (if you even have that option).
The Disk Utility is located in Applications>Utilities folder on your hard drive.Flag 0 -
Thanks bswins for your help and your perfect German.
Unfortunately both solutions didn't work for my problem
1. Repair Disk:
I mounted the .sparsebundle and tried to repair it but a similar message appears as before xxx.sparsebundle….. not recognized
2. Backup and restore
I did a manually restore, at the end the same message … not regognized
Meanwhile the Vault appears back in the Knox preferences. But it requires my password. If I enter it guess what message appears, … not recognized.
Luckily I had made my time machine backup with the data before I transferred it to a Knox Vault. But still some work is lost and with this experience I am not sure if I can convince my company that I can keep my mac. All others are using already PC Laptops with encrypted Harddisc under Windows due to security constraints.Flag 0 -
Klaus,
Gern geschehen!
However, I'm sorry neither method worked.
You mentioned that you used Time Machine to backup your data prior to transferring to a Knox Vault. Out of curiosity, are you excluding your Knox Vaults from the Time Machine backup?
I ask because it is NOT recommended to include Knox Vaults in Time Machine backups. Please see the following post for more details: Securing external hard drive Time Machine Backup with Knox
If you are/were including the vaults, that could explain your recent corruption. It also may give you a way to convince your company to allow you to keep your Mac. Nobody should have to give up his Mac against his will! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
Thanks for your replies and your patience. I hope you will have an answer soon.

I repeated Time Machine Backup several times in order to stress the point that including mounted Knox Vaults is potentially dangerous to your data.Flag 0 -
Brandt, you are very correct. It sounds like that could be the cause of the trouble. Perhaps once the vaults are excluded from Time Machine backups, you will be able to keep your Mac, Klaus! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
Ich hoffe, das hilft.Flag 0 -

for this information - I guess I forgot to read the fine print <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />
I will try it again and file the crpyted data by excluding Knox Vaults from Time Machine. For security reason I will keep also a copy of the uncrpyted data in parallel for a while.
And yes, I will keep the revolution alive to keep my Mac.Flag 0 -
Klaus,
I'm glad you will give Knox another try. I had a few fine print hiccups in the beginning, but now I am running without problems.
I believe it is wise to run a parallel system for a while...at least until you feel more secure using Knox.
Personally, I use Knox's backup feature every day and copy the latest version to a flash drive and to Dropbox. I don't use Time Machine, but please note Khad's comment in the thread I linked to in my last post:
That's one of the prime reasons why Knox's built-in backups will always close/dismount the vault: it makes the resulting backup a consistently valid copy of the original. You can even have Knox backup your vaults to your Time Machine volume. You don't need a separate drive.
Since you do use Time Machine, it may be worth trying his suggestion.
I hope everything works for you.
Viel Glück!
