Upgrade Policy (and Timing)

<div class="IPBDescription">Is the next major version right around the corner?</div>Hiya,

Im planning on buying this software, but I thought about the following fact:

We are at Version number 3.9.x and it is obvious, that a next major version number is one of the next releases.

Do I need to pay for the next version in a few months again?

Then waiting would be a better deal at a x.9 release.

Hey there. Welcome to the forums.

In the past we have had a grace period for those who purchased within a certain time frame prior to the release date where we granted free licenses. This is usually a very generous time period. I can't say when version 4 will be coming out as we haven't crossed that bridge yet, but I can say it isn't going to be tomorrow. I would say you're pretty safe buying today.

    uhu,

To add to Ben's excellent response, I'd like to point out that the current version of 1Password for Mac is 3.5.9 vs. 3.9.x.

As Ben stated, in the past, AgileBits has been very generous with their upgrade policy. Luckily, in this case, the next announced upgrade will be to version 3.6

It is AB's policy allow free upgrades to all versions within the same group (i.e. 3.x to 3.y), so there is no need to hold off on purchasing 1P at this time solely due to worries about paying for a soon to be released upgrade.

From the 1Password Licenses page in the User Guide (emphasis added):
When you purchase 1Password your license will never expire and you can use it on the current version of 1Password indefinitely. Do note, however, that system updates from Apple could cause certain aspects of 1Password to stop working in the future. For example, when Apple released Safari 3, 1Password required an upgrade to continue functioning.

Historically, we have been very generous with upgrades: Since we released 1Password, we have given away over 100 free updates and upgrades. We will continue this tradition of generosity and paid license holders will always get all point updates for free. (Going from version 3.5 to version 3.6 is called a “point update” and will be free if you have a 1Password 3 license.)

Major new releases will require a paid upgrade, but it will be a discounted upgrade for paid license holders. Those who purchase 1Password within 45 days of any major upgrade will be able to upgrade for free. (Going from any version of 1Password 3 to any version of 1Password 4 is called a major version upgrade and will be paid, except if you purchased your license within 45 days prior to the new version’s release.
We all look forward to having you as a new member.

    Cheers!

Thanks for that Brandt. I will point out though that 4.0 could very well be the next release after 3.6. There is nothing holding our feet to the fire saying we have to release a 3.7, 3.8, and 3.9 before 4.0. That being said, I still expect 4.0 to be a good bit down the road.

    uhu,

Ben is absolutely correct. A review of past updates for 1Password for Mac definitely shows that AB has continuously pumped out fixes and functionality upgrades. So, there is no guarantee that after the free 3.6 upgrade is released, there may not be a swift jump to 4.0.

However, considering that 3.6 will not be released until late Spring (A Sneak Peak at 1Password 3.6), and AB's commitment to rigorous BETA testing before anointing a build as "Stable" (the 3.6 BETA testing has been in full swing since March 11th), I'm hoping that you can count on a fair amount of time passing before a major upgrade would be released...and then, it would be up to AB whether the major upgrade required a separate license.

I'll make you an offer. If you purchase a current license for 1P for Mac now, and a major upgrade requiring a new license purchase is released before January 1, 2012, I will buy the upgrade license for you.

    Deal?

I'm good for it. The AB folks know where to find me. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

P.S. I'm not kidding. Ask Khad (Administrator). He can vouch for me.
