Sync Mac from iPad

Hello everyone,

Something very bad happened this morning!

Basically I was trying to access my google account from 1password on GoogleChrome. I entered my master password but then the 1password popup froze for a few seconds and then disappeared. I then tried to open the application from the application folder but I was welcomed with the 'welcome to 1password' screen as if it was the first time I used it!

I must add that last night I installed 1password on my iPad and when I realised that I could sync it via wifi I deleted the backup file on my dropbox (stupid I know but I didn't like to have that file on dropbox...). The sync between the mac and the iPad went fine. And now I've got all my accounts on my iPAd but not on my Mac.

Sorry for the long description of the events but I've got two questions...

1. Is it possible that someone stole my password when 1password froze on chome?

2. Is it possible to sync my Mac from my iPad?

thank you very much for your time and help

bye

giorgio

Hello Giorgio and welcome to the Forums!

Sounds like you had a rough morning. I'm sorry things haven't been running smoothly for you lately, but let's take a look at your comments.

Your Chrome experience is odd, indeed, but I've experienced the same freeze very infrequently.

Once the popup disappeared, were you able to access your passwords via the browser extension (the Key icon)? Please give it another try and let me know. If you experience the issue again, there may be a problem with the extension, and deleting/reinstalling the function may be the best first step: Troubleshooting the 1Password extension in Chrome

Please note that only the current stable version of the Chrome browser is supported. Beta versions often work but are not guaranteed. Dev builds of Chrome are not supported.

I am not a security expert, but there are several on the AB team who are. I'm sure you will hear from one of them. The frozen popup window you experienced in Chrome does not give me the impression that your Master Password was captured. However, I will defer to those with more knowledge to offer a more comforting opinion.
2. Is it possible to sync my Mac from my iPad?
Yes!

Since you do not appear to want to use Dropbox syncing, following are two non-Dropbox options:

    1. Earlier, you stated: The sync between the mac and the iPad went fine. Based on this comment, it sounds like you have already successfully synced the platforms. Regardless, please review the following help guide: How to sync 1Password for iPad with 1Password for Mac

    2. If you're having a problem with Wi-Fi syncing, you can use the backup/restore method to repopulate your data to your Mac: Backing Up and Restoring Your 1Password Data.

Once you've saved an iPad backup file to your Mac, launch the desktop application and go to File>Restore Data File From Backup... Locate the backup file on your Mac, select it, and you should be good to go.

Please reply with any additional questions you may have. I'm guessing I missed something in this long reply, so let me know. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    Cheer!

  • Hello Brandt,

First of all let me thank you both for your welcome and for your very helpful answer!

To answer your question about the chrome icon: yes, I did try to click on it again but it wouldn't work. It did act like I was clicking on it (it looked like I could 'press down the button') but the action was unresponsive.

Now I managed to retrieve all my data thanks to you and the support team!

I am still a bit worried for my data though... or I shouldn't?

Thank you very much again Brandt for your long and useful reply

    bye
Not if you typed it into the 1Password extension. 1Password uses Secure Input to process your master password. Any application can enable Secure Input (and 1Password for Mac does). With Secure Input enabled, all typing is passed directly to the active application — no other applications can observe your typing. Secure Input is used for entering passwords and other sensitive information. This means that if malicious key-logging software or “spy-ware” somehow gets on your system, it cannot record your passwords. Secure Input is generally enabled when you type into a password field. Some applications also enable Secure Input at other times. Check out this other thread for more information about keyloggers.

I would recommend using Dropbox to sync 1Password. It is automatic and provides an offsite backup of your data file. You can sync from across your living room or across the world. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

I can't imagine going back to Wi-Fi syncing or — worse — manually backing up and restoring data. Dropbox is "set it and forget it" easy.
