Recommended master password length

I read somewhere on this forum a suggestion by someone on the support team that many people use short and thus less secure master passwords on their iOS devices than they typically do on their desktop machines. I use a complex sixteen character password on the Mac Pro that I brought over to the iPhone so I wouldn't have to memorize yet another lengthy string. It is a royal pain to keep typing this to open each item, but I am concerned about security. What would be the recommendation for a good compromise between length and convenience on a mobile device?

Thanks!

    Hello dnobel,

In the Forums, there have been many discussions regarding iOS password length. Personally, I use a relatively long one with numbers, symbols and lower case/upper case letters. As you experienced, I find it to be a pain on my iPhone, but it's not so bad on my iPad.

Regarding a recommendation for a good compromise, I am sure that everyone has his or her own opinion. Primarily, that is due to each individual's risk aversion profile. However, I did take solace in a recent post made by AgileBits' security guru, Jeff Goldberg: Stolen Device Precautions

Review his comments and come to your own conclusions. I make my choices based on a "gut" feeling (i.e., I'm paranoid as Hades!). Jeff takes a mathematical approach. In the end, I believe it all comes down to your own comfort level.

    Cheers!
