Sweet! We need people who find this stuff easy-peasy. Come join us <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Seriously though, you're right, we need a ChromeOS solution and we're actively looking into supporting it.

I am an OS X and iOS user, and although I am not a fan or user of Chrome as either a browser or an OS, I do find the idea of being able to use it to be very appealing if ever I'm without a device and I need to sign into something that I've given myself a password from the 'Strong Password Generator' on.

1Password has come so far in such a short amount of time. Including support for Windows was a big step forward; Now I really can sign into services on almost any device. One of the best applications of the last decade; Keep it up, my friends.

I have to say, Chrome is really growing on me as my primary browser, I don't know why exactly but it does feel more light-weight than Safari, <bias> and of course the 1Password extension is very awesome </bias>

If you are at a computer without 1Password installed there's always 1PasswordAnywhere, a secure web application built right into your data file that gives you read-only access to your information when you're away from 1Password. You can read more about 1PasswordAnywhere in 1Password's user guide:

    http://help.agile.ws/1Password3/1passwordanywhere.html

You can also see it in action on our YouTube channel:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ne7cQQ7Moow

It's certainly not as awesome as a Dropbox connected Chrome extension or ChromeOS extension would be, but for many users it works well. I know Dave is very excited about making 1Password as flexible as possible but still very user friendly so don't be surprised if you see something truly magical and revolutionary coming from us in the future.

Aww thank you, we're really happy to be able to support 1Password on Windows and the best is yet to come. Thanks so much for the kind words and encouragement, they really do mean a lot to everyone here.
  • I shall have to look into it; Safari and Firefox are beginning to feel somewhat bloated in recent months, but I wasn't overly impressed when I tried out Chrome in late 2008; Probably time to give it another try. OmniWeb 5 is also very good as I'm sure you know with you being fans of OmniGroup's OmniFocus.

Also really nice to see that you support NetNewsWire; Really makes a big difference having all of your favourite applications supported!

You just completely flipped my little world upside down in the most positive manner; I was completely unaware of 1PasswordAnywhere. What a wonderful feature! Unsure how that passed me by as it seems to be a highly used feature. I was under the impression that the keychain file was a proprietary extension and not actually an explorable folder from anything but 1Password itself.

Just updated to 3.5.3 from 3.5.2 and moved my datafile over from iDisk to Dropbox. Huge improvement in speeds compared to the sluggish iDisk sync that I was using; No more file conflicts due to the way that Dropbox works which is very nice as I was getting the odd conflict here and there whenever MobileMe synced on another computer and I had 1Password open.

Also; Huge kudos to you for the ability to painlessly move the datafile over to Dropbox! It's all those little features which make 1Password such an enjoyable and useful application.

Extension or not; 1PasswordAnywhere is fantastic!

You are all very welcome. I'm an avid user of Knox and I've been eyeing up AllBookmarks for several days. May make the jump later seeing as you offer it for free download; Wonderful looking application. Reminds me of the 1Password iPad application where you can go to the URL and autofill the necessary fields.

I'm with you there, I didn't like Chrome at first, but with the latest 8.x versions it's a huge improvement since the 2008 versions, finally becoming a true browser. NetNewsWire support has saved my bacon a few times when logging into sites for reading RSS and commenting, though I've recently switched to the Beta of Reeder for Mac.

That's actually one of the reasons we changed to the Agile Keychain format, it gives us much more flexibility and if you look at the Agile Keychain file on Dropbox or on Windows, it is just a folder, on OS X it's known as an OS X Bundle, similar to how iPhoto and Aperture's libraries work.

Dropbox syncing is fantastic, and in many ways it's a real shame that iDisk can't match their service in terms of speed, reliability and handling of the OS X bundles like the Agile Keychain. Glad to hear it's working out so well for you so far.

Thanks again for the kind words and your support!

    Welcome to the forums, dc1!

Thank you for contacting us about your interest in 1Password for Chrome OS!

As you may know, our focus for mobile development has been on iOS, Android, and Windows Phone 7. Given our druthers, of course, we'd support every popular platform, but we just don't have the resources to do that. This doesn't mean we're shutting the door on the other mobile platforms out there, but (to keep expectations realistic) it does mean that iOS, Android, and Windows Phone 7 are where active mobile development is currently taking place.

I wouldn't really call Chrome OS a mobile platform. They're laptops.
  • Good point, Michael, the ChromeBooks do look fantastic but they are an interesting hybrid of a full OS and a mobile solution, I'm not sure I'd use a Chrome OS device as my main system, and I don't think that's Google's intention, I've been thinking that ChromeOS would be a great solution for internet cafés, simple, no need to worry about anti-virus, and people can login with their Google account instantly.

As Khad mentioned, our focus right now is on different OS development, so for the desktop Windows and Mac and on the mobile side iOS, Android and Windows Phone 7. Similarly, as Dave (dteare) mentioned earlier in the thread, we'd love to have a solution for ChromeOS, and it's something we're looking into, but there's no timeframe just now for when this may be available.

    Thanks for everyone's feedback on this <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

  • Hi, while I am a happy user of 1Password on MacOS with Chrome, I have not yet figured a way to install 1Password on my new Chrome book (Samsung Series 5). The Mac/PC versions install the extension not over the Chrome Market or a website, butr from the PC client. On a Chrome book, there is no local client, of course.

Any help how to get the extension installed?

    Thanks,

I merged your topic with the appropriate thread.

At this time, 1Password does not support ChromeOS. Please review the previous posts for more information.

I'm sorry that I don't have a better answer for you at this time, but thank you for adding your vote!

    Cheers!

  • Hi,

I am looking for ways to get 1Password onto the Chromebook Chrome browser. Since there's no "PC" I cannot install the full version on this machine and then enable the extension locally, I have to somehow download the extension for Chrome from somewhere. Any idea/URL where and how?

    Thanks

    Christof

P.S.: I posted this question before but it was deleted!?

    Thanks.

Why would it be so difficult to make the chrome browser extension downloadable? After all all other chrome extensions work flawless on the chrome OS, but just your design of how you deliver the extension via the PC client is the issue.

Maybe it is a commercial problem?

It would be too bad if I had to go away from 1Password because of this. But my Chrome book is really useless if I don't have access to my passwords...
  • khad

1Password data is not necessarily stored "in the cloud". By default 1Password for Mac and Windows both store the data locally in the file system. Things are a bit different in Chrome OS. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />

We're not saying no, but we don't have anything else to announce right now. I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you at this time.

    [/quote]Hi Christof,

Our extension isn't self-contained like many other extensions on the Chrome Web store. As long as the extensions don't rely on external resources, it can be easily ported to the ChromeOS/Chrome Web Store. This is also the reason why we do not have our extension at the web store, because in order for the extension to work, 1Password must be installed along with an active data file or in other words, our extension requires external resources for it to work correctly. Building an extension for ChromeOS would be like building an extension for a new browser on a new OS for us. Even our Chrome extension on the Windows platform is a bit different.

We’re working on something that’ll make it easy to build a ChormeOS extension *a possibility* but it’ll be a while before it is completed. Every major release of Chrome browser is also bringing in new APIs that’ll make it easy to work with external resources, for ChromeOS as well. We’re not saying ChromeOS support is never coming, just that we want to but no timeframe on when.

Thanks for your replies guys. I understand. Of course, you do have a fantastic cloud-mode with Dropbox, which could be leveraged, but I understand that there's more going on under the hood.

It is just such a pity that a great concept like Chromebook and a great product like 1Password make me choose one against the other...

Thanks for adding your vote for a 1P ChromeOS solution.

Also, I'm glad you read about 1PasswordAnywhere. I know it's not exactly what you want at this time, but, as you stated, it is a good workaround in the interim.

  • Random thought which I'm sure the developers know, but Chromebooks both have internal data storage and can add additional storage via SD card or USB.

Hope this gets working soon. I'm not a software developer so I could in fact use a Chromebook as my primary system if I was able to add data to 1Password. That's literally the only thing holding me back.

I have been using the Dropbox extension on my Chromebook (CR-48). Using that it's easy to get access to 1Password Anywhere, which is clumsy but better than nothing.

It seems to me that it would be relatively easy to have a Chrome OS extension that depended on the Dropbox extension. Just a thought.

Thanks for 1Password! I've been using it for a couple of years now and really depend on it for all of my on-line life.

Welcome to the forums, Chris, and thanks for the kind words. Hopefully your current solution will be helpful to other Chrome OS users for the time being. I'm glad you shared it!

I haven't played around with Chrome OS too much but my guess is that the extensions are still sandboxed as they are in the desktop versions of Chrome, so we would have to build a complete solution ourselves. It is not outside the realm of possibility, though.
  • This would be a very sensible product addition for 1Password. Solutions like ChromeOS are encouraging more users to move towards cross-platform cloud solutions for everything, including keychains. The new chromebooks have a filesystem that the user can access (unlike the CR-48); I haven't looked into it, but maybe there's some way to have the extension pull the keychain from that.

Also, you should note that because the extension is installed from the local 1P app on most platforms, it doesn't sync to the Chrome profiles of users that they can sync across Chrome browsers. This would not be the case if users downloaded an proper extension or app from the Chrome webstore.

  • Yeah, I know the subject sounds kinda odd but would it be sane to build a chrome extension based on 1Password Anywhere?

I'm thinking in terms of Chrome OS. Since there's no user space to speak of, an extension that relies on JavaScript and the keychain on DropBox would be useful.

Has this been done? I know it's feasible, but is it smart? Are there caveats to take into account?

    Thanks,

Welcome to the forums, Marc! I merged your post with this existing thread. Support for Chrome OS is something that has been suggested before and we appreciate knowing you would find it useful as well.

We're doing some very fun stuff with JavaScript lately which may end up helping us if and when we make the leap to develop a full Chrome OS solution.

If we can be further assistance, please let us know.
