Browser Extensions, Security and Logins options

Hello,

I downloaded the trial and I've looked in the users guide but can't find answers to my questions. I also think that the user guide is not as well designed as it doesn't address the manual input in the program itself (1password). It focuses almost exclusively on the automatic features.

My questions:

1. I don't understand the choices you can make under 'login'. What does the choices under 'Display' and 'Submit' and 'Security' do?

2. When I have logged out of 1Password I still can access all my logins in the browser extension. Why?

3. I read somewhere that the options 'high security' and 'low security' asks for a master password to get access to the logins but that doesn't work for me. Some how the User Guide wasn't that obvious to me... <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I use LastPass and no one can access my web pages passwords if I have logged out. I'm sure that there is some feature in 1password for this as well that I don't understand from the User Guide. I also can have the LastPass program ask for my master password for some sensitive web addresses and that's a good feature to if I forget to log out from LastPass - I just can't find that either in 1password.

Can I get 1password to auto fill user name and password when I go to a web page? Now I have to click the Go & Fill menu.

Can someone also explain if tags or folders is the best way to organize the data in 1password? And maybe give some examples of how you yourself use these futures.

Hope someone can help me with this so I further can test 1password before the trial expires.

    Thanks for trying 1Password, Nin!

We recommend always saving Logins in the browser where 1Password can "learn" the proper form fields from the source code of the web page. If you create a login in the main 1Password application, the chances of form filling working properly are dramatically reduced since ever web page uses different form field names. There is no way for 1Password to know the proper fields in which to place your username and password unless it learns from the page itself. Of course, a majority of sites use field names which 1Password works quite well with, but there is no benefit to manually inputting information, so we recommend letting 1Password autosave everything right in your browser. It is easier for you and produces better results: a winning combination!

Other items types (Accounts, Wallet items, etc.) do need to be entered manually, but I'm not sure what sort of documentation we could have for that. File > New Item then enter your information. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
1. I don't understand the choices you can make under 'login'. What does the choices under 'Display' and 'Submit' and 'Security' do?
These are all set automatically when you save the logins in the browser. Check out this thread for information on the Display option.

The 1Password feature that submits a web form is called Autosubmit. You can configure this feature for all sites or just for specific sites, and you can temporarily disable it "on the fly":

    • To disable Autosubmit globally: In your web browser, click the 1P toolbar button, and uncheck the Autosubmit Logins option; or, in 1Password, choose 1Password > Preferences, select the General tab, and uncheck the "Submit automatically after filling a Login (Autosubmit)" option.

    • To disable Autosubmit for a particular web site: In 1Password, select the site's Login item. Press Command+E to edit it, and change its Submit option to Never.

    • To disable Autosubmit temporarily: In your web browser, hold down the Option key, and click the 1P toolbar button. The word "Fill" (rather than "Fill & Submit") next to the login indicates that 1Password will fill the form but not submit it.

As an example, for any web form that includes a CAPTCHA or other similar "challenge" entry field, using a Submit option of Never on the Logins item itself is the proper choice so that anything else possible is filled in, and you can then respond to the challenge before continuing manually.

You normally only need to edit this when troubleshooting, so the autosubmit information is located in the User Guide under "Website Login Issues."

The "High Security" and "Low Security" setting only applies to 1Password on the iPhone. (Hence the iPhone icon next to it.) Please see the "Security Levels in 1Password and 1Password for iOS" section in the User Guide for more information.
2. When I have logged out of 1Password I still can access all my logins in the browser extension. Why?
The browser extensions and 1Password application can be unlocked independently. There is not a way to "log out of" 1Password (only lock it). Quitting 1Password.app does not lock 1Password. Many folks like to have 1Password remain unlocked while they work in their browsers but prompt for a master password when the main application is accessed. However, you can change this behavior in 1Password's security preferences along with many other lock settings. Specifically, it sounds like you are interested in the "Disable automatic unlock…" settings.
3. I read somewhere that the options 'high security' and 'low security' asks for a master password to get access to the logins but that doesn't work for me. Some how the User Guide wasn't that obvious to me...
Again, please see the "Security Levels in 1Password and 1Password for iOS" section in the User Guide for more information on the security levels which only apply on the iPhone where both an unlock code and master password are employed for quick access to lower security items with just an unlock code (if you choose).

What a coincidence! I just replied to another thread with that very feature request only moments ago. Are you signing up with multiple forum accounts? <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> (Only kidding.)

Also a requested feature. Please see the autofill feature request thread for some tips and tricks to gaining some speed with 1Password. We are considering autofill for the future, but in the meantime, I just press ⌘\ on my keyboard or use Go & Fill to load the page and fill in my credentials. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

I hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns. There is a wealth of knowledge both in the User Guide and these forums. We've got a great community of folks here who have had some great discussions about these topics in the past, and I look forward to seeing your voice added to the conversations!

    Cheers,
  • Hello khad!

To begin with, nah I only have this alias. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> Why you get similar questions are probably that your documentation (user guide) needs to be improved. This forum is really great and the quick responses you get but please incorporate the good answers you get here into the user guide as well. We users are trying to tell you something when we ask and can't understand or find a good answers in the guide.

For example, it was not at all clear that some things just were for iPhone and that symbol you are referring to I didn't react to at all. I was looking at the non iPhone guide (the mac guide) but still reading about the iPhone feature (witch was not clearly written) so maybe that's the confusion.

After testing 1password a bit more, I think almost exclusively it's good that there is no automatic filling. I look at the 'fill' button when I'm at a web page and can then choose to login or not if I have an account. Sometimes I don't want to login as me just stroll around on a page.

    Thanks for the replies!
  • Thanks for the feedback Nin!

You are correct. The user/help guides need a facelift. In fact, the process is underway.

1Password's app development across several of the supported platforms has accelerated during the last year, and, unfortunately, the documentation has not kept up. That's not an excuse, it's just the reality of the situation.

Feedback from members like you highlights the areas where the guides are particularly lacking. Please know that your comments are heard, understood and taken to heart.

Thank you again for taking the time to provide constructive criticism. When the updated guides finally arrive, I hope you will post your impressions.

    Cheers!
