Browser Extensions Not Working

edited July 2011 in Mac
Hi Folks,

I just recently updated 1Password (minor update I thought, I think I went from v3.5-ish to v3.6.1), and since have been unable to get browser extensions to work (except for Chrome, which still works). By this I mean that there is no evidence of 1Password having a presence in either Safari or Firefox. Where I used to have the icon for 1Password there is none, and the keyboard shortcuts don't do anything. I've tried various combinations of reinstalling, disabling, re-enabling, restarting browsers and 1password, rebooting, etc.

Any ideas?

Kindly,

Hal

ETA: I'm using a 2010 MacBook Pro running the latest version of Snow Leopard. Also using the latest versions of Safari & Firefox.

  • Hello Hal and welcome to the Forums!

Since Chrome is working for you, I have hope! Since updating to 3.6.1, have you enabled FF and Safari via the 1Password > Preferences > Browsers tab?

After updating to 3.6 from 3.5, I had to reenable my browser extensions in that preferences tab.

Please reply with additional detail regarding what steps, if any, you've taken. I would love to resolve this issue for you, and I'm confident that we will have you up and running very soon!

    Cheers!

    Hi Brandt,

I think I've got everything squared away on that preference pane. Attached is a screenshot of it. I've also tried the following:

    Quitting all web browsers

Uninstalling all browser extensions from this pane

    restarting my machine

    Reinstalling all browser extensions

    starting safari and FF

This did not seem to do anything at all.

Let me know if there's something else I should be trying.

    Thanks,

    Hal

    Hello,

I am facing the very same issue running 1P 3.6.1 on iMac running 10.6.8. Browser extensions do not work for Safari nor Firefox. I have now installed the Chrome extension, which works.

I have tried re-installing the browser extensions, fixing the folder permissions, to no avail...

Is there anything else I can do to fix this issue, please?

    Thank you,

OK, I tried to manually re-install the 1Password application (originally installed version 3.6.1 via automatic update) and the browser extensions seem to be working again...

Yep that's the one thing I didn't try. I actually had to remove all of the library files as well. Back and working like a charm now though. Thanks!

  • I'm having a similar problem with Firefox. I updated to 1P V3.6.1 a few days ago and all was working fine with Firefox 3.6.x (not sure which version). Today I got the auto update from Mozilla for 3.6.19 and installed. 1P is not working in the FF browser and Firefox is telling me that 3.6.19 is not compatible with the 1P 3.6.1 extensions. When I delete the 1P 3.6.1 extensions for FF4 and FF5 leaving just the 3.5.9 extension that does not work either. I'm reluctant to install FF5 because of some compatibility issues with some extensions that I need to use that were not supported in FF4.

    Any recommendations? -- Larry

Part way through the development of 1Password for Mac 3.6, we realized that we had to make critical internal changes to properly support customers running the latest of everything: the soon to be released OS X Lion, Snow Leopard, and the latest versions of Firefox. Because of that turning point, Firefox 3 is not able to be supported in 1Password for Mac 3.6.0 or higher.

Of course if you are able to use the latest version of Firefox, currently version 5, then we'd highly recommend this and you can get the latest version of Firefox here:

    http://getfirefox.com/

Once you have downloaded and installed the latest version of Firefox, go to the 1Password Menu > Preferences > Browsers and check the box next to Firefox.

If you have to use Firefox 3 with 1Password for any reason, you'll need to downgrade to the version of 1Password (3.5) that still supports Firefox 3:

    http://help.agilebits.com/1Password3/legacy_versions.html

Be sure to quit 1Password and all your browsers. Drag the newly downloaded version of 1Password to the same location as any previous one -- replacing it. Run the new copy of 1Password once before launching any of your browsers and go to the 1Password Menu > Preferences > Browsers. Check the box next to Firefox 3 and disable the one for Firefox 4 if you don't use it. Open your browser and 1Password should be there now.

I hope that helps. Please let me know.

    Thanks!

How do I manually reinstall without losing saved password data.

Yes it's a stupid question but this is an annoying problem and I don't want to lose all my passwords.

Hello ozdude and welcome to the Forums!

No, it's NOT a stupid question! Not at all.

The 1Password file that contains all your data is called the 1Password.agilekeychain. This file is separate from the 1Password.app file that you click on to launch 1Password.

To find the location of your 1Password.agilekeychain file, in the 1Password application menu, please go to 1Password > Preferences... . The location of the the file is shown under Data File on the General tab. If you want to be extra careful, you can navigate to that location in Finder and copy the 1Password.agilekeychain file to your desktop or somewhere else.

When you reinstall 1Password, you are overwriting the 1Password.app file, but you are not overwriting the 1Password.agilekeychain file. Once you reinstall and launch 1Password 3 for Mac, you should be open up with all your data. If you are presented with a choice of creating a new data file or using an existing data file, click "existing" and navigate to the location you noted on the General tab.

I hope that answers your question. Please let us know if you have additional questions or concerns.

    Cheers!

  • @Khad:

Does this mean that all users of Firefox (and browser using the same engine, e.g., Camino) will have to stop upgrading 1Password from now on and stick with version 3.5.x?? Reading between the lines, one can almost get the impression that this is just "tough luck" and nothing can be done about it... Or are you guys trying to make future versions of 1Password work again with the latest Mozilla engine?

    Thanks!

    Hey ozdude,

I shouldn't have assumed that you knew the reinstall procedures. Please forgive me. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    Please follow these steps:

    1. Download 1Password from our web site:

    http://agilebits.com/downloads

Click on the "Download Now" button under "1Password 3"

    2. Quit your web browser.

    3. Unzip the downloaded file, and drag the newly downloaded version of 1Password.app to your Applications folder.

    4. Run 1Password at least once and then your web browser

Your information is stored in a data file separate from the application, so it will not be harmed by this procedure.

Let me know if the steps are not clear, and/or you have additional questions.

    Cheers!

Not at all, Jorg. If you want to stay up to date with 1Password, simply also stay up to date with Firefox. The latest version of Firefox is supported in the latest version of 1Password. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

Aside from a number of new features, the latest versions of any browser also contain security fixes. As a 1Password user, I'm sure you take your security seriously, so I just thought it would be prudent to also mention that.

If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

Thanks, Khad! I guess I am out of luck anyway, as I had hoped to continue using Camino and 1Password also after I upgrade to Lion. But, as I have just read elsewhere in this forum, Camino's days appear to be numbered, which is why an updated version of 1Password working with Camino is unlikely (or vice versa).

    Cheers,

    -Jorg
  • Hey Jorg,

On behalf of Khad, you are very welcome!

I'm sorry Camino appears to be dying too. At least we have fond memories. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
