Automatic background syncing via Dropbox is the preferred method, but you can also sync manually via Wi-Fi.

I hope that helps. Please let me know.

    Cheers!

I had normally been wifi syncing. Won't doing this sync my blank new MacBook 1Password data to the data-ful iPhone app and thereby erase all my passwords?

I'm trying to sync via DropBox per the instructions here: http://help.agilebits.com/1Password3/cloud_syncing_with_dropbox.html, but my phone app has been stuck on Step 5 (Login: Loading Remote Encryption Keys...) for like 20 minutes now. GRRRRRRRR

    Please help <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
  • Hey there, Eldiablojoe!

That's no good at all! Before you do anything else, be sure you back up your data. Just launch 1Password on your iPhone and go to (More) > Settings > Database > Backup & Restore and follow the instructions to navigate to the address provided using the web browser on your computer to save the .1ptbackup file.

Next, please try this: On your Mac, launch 1Password and go to Help > Troubleshooting > Rebuild Data file... Once that is complete, try the Dropbox sync again. Just make sure you are using the correct passwords, since there are so many different ones involved in this process: Dropbox account, 1Password Mac Master Password, 1Password iPhone Master Password and Unlock Code, etc.

Depending on how that goes and how you want to proceed, we may need you to send us a Diagnostics Report to get everything sorted. If necessary, please generate one in 1Password on your Mac by going to Help > Troubleshooting > Diagnostics Report... Just attach this to an email (support@agilebits.com), and be sure to include a link to this forum thread for context.

Please let me know how it turns out. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Thanks Brenty, but I'm having trouble following your suggestion. When I go to Help -> Troubleshooting -> Rebuild Data File, the Rebuild Data File option is grayed out <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> There is a pop up in the foreground that closes 1Password when I close the pop up. The pop up says "Welcome to 1 Password, click here for New Data File, click here to Find Existing (two buttons are the only options on the screen.

    Hello again, Eldiablojoe!

Thanks for being so specific. It sounds like 1Password for some reason doesn't know where your data file is. I think there might be a misunderstanding. It is a bit counterintuitive, but you actually need to have a data file set up in 1Password on the Mac first (2. Configure Your Desktop to Use Dropbox) to get the Dropbox sync set up. I believe that 1Password on your iPhone is not able to load the encryption keys because there are none there (yet). Sorry for the misunderstanding. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Please follow these steps to set up Dropbox sync and get your data where you want it -- on both of your devices. Feel free to skip a few if you have already set up your Dropbox account. I suspect you may only need to do steps 3 and 4:

Sign up for a free Dropbox account at https://www.dropbox.com/register
Go to http://dropbox.com/ and download and install their software on your computer; log in using the Dropbox account you created.
Launch 1Password on your computer, create a new data file, go to Preferences > General, and under Data File click on "Move to Dropbox..."
Wait for Dropbox to finish syncing your data. You can verify this by clicking on the Dropbox icon at the top of your screen. It's all set when it says "All files up to date" in the menu.
On your iPhone, launch 1Password and go to (More) > Settings > Sync > Dropbox, and turn Dropbox Sync ON.
Enter the Master Password for 1Password on your iPhone and turn Remember ON.
Enter your Dropbox login information (and the Master Password for the 1Password data on your Mac, if necessary) and your 1Password data will be automatically synchronized in the background!
..That's it!

    I hope this helps. I look forward to hearing back from you. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Okay, thanks for the detailed write up. I followed all those steps. on the iPhone app under the Dropbox Sync page of the app, After pressing Sync Now, I get the message: "Dropbox sync failed to download remote encryption keys. Make sure Dropbox is fully synced on your desktop."

If you got 1Password to load your data on your computer, you should be able to go to Help > Troubleshooting > Rebuild Data File... now. This might be just what the doctor ordered.

Afterward, you may need to reset Dropbox sync on your iPhone. Just go to Settings > Sync > Dropbox > Account, and then tap Reset and Start over. Then just set it up again and it should work. Don't worry. This only resets the sync settings, not your data. Let me know if this helps. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I really appreciate your help Brenty, but I'm still at a standstill. Here's a screen cap of the status of my 1Password, and the greyed out area that doesn't allow me to rebuild data file:

Unfortunately, you will not be able to sync your data until you create a new data file by clicking the big "New Data File" button as described in step two of the Dropbox sync guide to which I originally linked.

The error about loading remote encryption keys is because the iOS app is looking for the encryption keys in your data file, but no data file exists. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />

Once you click the "New Data File" button, you will need to enter a master password. This can be whatever you want it to be, and we have a good blog post which may be helpful in choosing a master password.

SIDE NOTE: Your master password does not have to be the same between 1Password for Mac/Windows and your 1Password iOS app(s). Many users like to have a less-complicated one for 1Password iOS apps because of the interaction using the much smaller virtual keyboard. Because they do not have to be the same, they are never synced from one device/platform to another.

Once you have set up the empty data file in 1Password for Mac, you can click the "Move to Dropbox" button in 1Password's preferences on your Mac. Wait for Dropbox to finish syncing and then reset syncing in 1Password on your iOS device, and it should work now.

Please let me know how it turns out.

    Cheers,
