Few differences in 3.6 compared to 3.5

What up guys,

Love 1password and I always like to keep up to date, but I have come across some differences in 3.6 that I actually preferred in 3.5. For example; when I have multiple logins for a site, say for example YouTube. In 3.5, when I pressed cmd+\ to fill the login, it would first bring up a menu to select the desired login and then prompt for the master password. In 3.6, it first asks you for the master password and then brings up a menu to select the desired login. Minor change, but I really miss selecting the login first and then typing my password. I guess I just got used to doing it that way. Was this change intentional?

Another thing that I noticed was when replacing logins, it actually updates the login instead of replacing it. In 3.5, choosing replace login (in the save login dialogue), it would completely overwrite the login with a new one. In 3.6, it basically adds to the login, maintaining the previous password in the password history section. Once again, a minor change but I really liked being able to completely overwrite a login by choosing replace. Now, for what I want, I have to physically delete the login and then re-save it as a new login. Once again, was this change intentional?

    Hey ilmolto,

Thanks for asking about this (and for your love of 1Password as well). <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

As we move toward our new data format and browser extensions, the master password prompt necessarily needs to occur before anything can be displayed. I can get into the slightly more technical details if you are interested, but this was intentional.

Likewise, there were concerns of data loss when the password history if the password history was cleared unexpectedly as happened to a few folks. It is always better to err on the side of data retention by keeping the password history rather than risk data loss. As you mentioned, you can just delete the Login item and create a new one if you prefer to lose the password history.

I hope that help. Please let me know.

    Cheers,

    Hi khad,

Thanks for your reply. No need for a detailed explanation. It's really not a big deal and I can easily get used to doing it the 3.6 way. I was more just curious if it was a deliberate change or not. Same for the replacing of logins. It definitely makes sense to be safe than sorry. Thanks again for your reply.

    Regards,

    Daniel
  • Hey there, Daniel!

Thanks for following up. On behalf of khad, you are most welcome! I am glad everything is better understood now.

To be honest, this change gave me pause initially as well, even though I should have known better! I guess we are creatures of habit. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

    Hi brenty,

That's so true. I guess we like to stick to what we're used to. Change is something we try to avoid because it takes time to adapt to I guess. Anyway, I have another question...

I'm using Safari. When I can't be bothered reaching for the keyboard to fill a login, I will just right click my mouse, go to the 1Password menu, choose Fill Login and select a login. Like this:

But sometimes the login I want to select is actually right above the Fill Login menu, like so:

Why is this? Don't get me wrong. Either way is super quick. I'm just curious as to why sometimes it's right there above the Fill Login menu and sometimes it's in the Fill Login menu...

It likely depends on the URL you are visiting when you go to fill the Login. If it matches the URL saved in the login item exactly, you will see the Login "pulled out" and the other Logins for that domain "bumped" into the "Other Logins" submenu. If the URL doesn't exactly match any of the URLs you have saved in the Logins for that domain, they will all be listed side by side.

Of course, if the behavior is different even when viewing the exact same URL, then we have something else on our hands. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

    Please let me know.

    Thanks!

Oh ok I understand now. The website I was referring to has some different login pages so that must have been it. Also, not sure why, but when trying to fill the login for http://au.playstation.com/, I'm only able to fill the login by using the context menu and not by the keyboard shortcut cmd+\. Just a heads up. Thanks again for your reply. I have a much better understanding of 1Password now <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Edit: I just tried again and strangely enough it works now. That is weird...
  • Thanks for the update, ilmolto!

Brace yourself! This issue will actually be going away completely with our new extension, but of course this is more change. Fortunately, we will adapt, though. It will take some getting used to, but for the sake of consistency and better filling in all of our browser extensions, this is the direction we are headed. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Me too! I used it a while back before it was even in beta, so I probably won't recognize it at first! I am still running Snow Leopard doing support, since that is what most of our customers are using, but Lion and Safari 5.1 are right around the corner! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />
