1P no longer saves logins with FF5/Mac

ddpthy
edited July 2011 in Mac
I upgraded to Firefox 5, 1Password 3.6.1, and 1Password extension for FF5. Since then, 1Password is no longer automatically saving logins.

The extension is working properly otherwise; the button and menu appear as expected and filling logins works just fine.

I'm running Mac OS 10.6.8.

Hi there ddpthy, welcome to the forums!

Can you please check and make sure autosave is turned on? You can check by clicking the 1P button in Firefox and dropping down to where it says "Autosave Logins." Make sure that is checked.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for the welcome! Autosave Logins is indeed checked.

1Password should be able to automatically save most web sites. We have documented some situations that would cause the Autosave function not to kick in:

    http://help.agilebits.com/1Password3/missing_autosave.html

Please note issue #2 regarding reusing passwords. Is it possible that this is applicable in your case?

    Please let me know.

    Thanks!

Thanks for the reply! I can be sure none of the first three apply, as I'm using unique passwords on non-Flash websites I haven't had accounts on before (and Autosave is on).

On #4, I guess it's technically possible that I've just come up against some of those "exception" websites—which I have run across in the past—but it seems really unlikely. First, it's been five or six websites whose passwords have not been saved since the upgrade—so it would be a big coincidence if they all happened to use the "tricks" you mention in the documentation. Second, one of them was this forum! I can't imagine you guys would use a forum platform that didn't work with 1P, right? <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    Hey there, ddpthy!

Thanks for following up. I would love to know what sites they were so that I can test them myself. I suspect that there may be an issue, though, because I just tested autosave on this forum myself, since you mentioned it, and it worked as expected.

Do you have exceptions saved for these sites in 1Password > Preferences > Logins > Avoid Autosave on these domains? And are you experiencing any other unusual 1Password behaviour? I am using the exact same versions that you are, and it worked in my case. Please try going to http://gmail.com and enter a fake username and password, and see if 1Password offers to save it for you. I do this many times a day, and when Gmail fails me I know something is wrong...

If it is not working at all, please try reinstalling your Firefox extension:

Quit any running web browsers and launch 1Password.
Go to Preferences > Browsers, and click on the button labeled "Remove All Extensions".
Launch Firefox to verify that 1Password is not listed under Tools > Addons > Extensions in Firefox.
Quit Firefox and 1Password, and download a fresh copy from our site.
Drag the new copy of 1Password to your Applications folder -- replacing the previous copy.
Make sure no browsers are running and launch 1Password.
Go to Preferences > Browsers, and click the checkboxes to install the Firefox extension.
Launch Firefox and verify that it is working properly.
Firefox will likely complain about an incompatible extension. This is normal. Just continue and Firefox will disable any incompatible extensions and leave the compatible ones active.

I hope this helps. Please let me know how it turns out. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Hey there—thanks for the thorough response.

So, I've got no exceptions saved for these domains, and neither have I seen any other strange 1Password behavior. Here are a few of the domains:

http://forum.agile.ws

https://www.pa.reserveworld.com/Register.aspx

http://www.carnegiemuseums.org/interior.php?pageID=12 (browse jobs, pick one and begin the application process)

http://www.barackobama.com/ (sorry to air my political leanings but it's in the name of troubleshooting!)
Gmail did not prompt me to save the new password. I'll try reinstalling the FF extension now and report back shortly.

    Thanks again,

    D.

OK. So I tried reinstalling the extension (and I'm good at following instructions, in case that's a worry—and had actually taken that step once before), with no success.

That made me think something was wrong with my installation or configuration of Firefox, so I tried installing the 1P extension to a stock profile I use for testing. (It has no extensions installed and most of the configuration is unchanged.) That worked!

I returned to my regular profile and with plenty of restarting in-between steps, tried the following—none of which brought the autosaving back to life, sadly:

disabling all extensions besides 1P

getting very permissive with JavaScript (usually I have it locked down somewhat so that pop-up windows can't remove scrollbars, e.g.)—but then, I don't even think the 1P extension uses JS, right?

Went through about:config looking for items I may have changed that could interfere with 1P. Changed a few things back to the defaults, but again—no success.
It's hard for me to think of anything else I may have done, but clearly it's a problem with my profile in Firefox. Any ideas about changes users make that can affect the extension? Note that I'm using the default theme.

    Thanks!

Sorry -- One more update. I got a pop-up "sheet" with a 1Password error in Firefox just now. I tried to copy the text but accidentally dismissed the dialogue, I think. Anyway it said something about a framework not being found (one of those things that starts with "NSFramework," I think? Or "NS"-something) and attributed it to an installation issue. I've now reinstalled twice, so I don't think that's the problem, but perhaps this is a useful lead anyway. Sorry not to have the full text. I can't recreate the pop-up but I'll watch for it and I'll post back if I can. (To answer your next question, no, the error didn't leave a log entry—at least not anywhere I can find one in Console.)

To help us track down the issue more quickly, could you please email us your Diagnostics Report? To generate the report from 1Password on your Mac, open 1Password and select Help > Troubleshooting > Diagnostics Report. Then attach the entire file to an email to support@agilebits.com.

Please include a link to this thread in order that we might more quickly "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, though.

Without seeing your Diagnostics Report, my advice would be to start with a fresh installation of 1Password and new Firefox profile. It sounds like you have done both and things were working. Are you getting the error in the brand new profile or in the old, corrupt one?

Please let me know. I look forward to your reply and your Diagnostics Report. I'm sure we can stomp this out for good soon.

    Cheers,

Thanks so much for your attention here. I'll send the report along.

The error came in the old, corrupt profile—and actually, it happened again and I managed to snag the text this time. Again, report forthcoming, but for posterity:
[JavaScript Application]

The 1Password extension encounter an error:

[Exception: ... "Node was not found" code: "8" nsresult: 0x80530008 (NS_ERROR_DOM_NOT_FOUND_ERR)" location: "chrome://global/content/bindings/toolbar.xml Line: 358"]

This is likely caused by a failure during installation and can be fixed by reinstalling 1Password.

Details on reinstalling the 1Password extension can be found in the user guide. Would you like to go there now?
Thank you for sending the diagnostics report, Devan.

I can see from the diagnostics report that your data file could use a rebuild.

Please try rebuilding your data file in 1Password on your Mac (Help > Troubleshooting > Rebuild Data File…) and let me know if that helps the situation in your default Firefox profile.

It may be a bug in Firefox. We have seen this on occasion but have been unable to track down the precise cause in all cases. Rebuilding your data file may be the last resort as far as what we can resolve on our end, but please let me know how it goes and if your new, uncorrupt profile is still working well.

I will also pass this along to the developers to look over.

    Thanks!

Thanks Khad. Data file rebuilt; no change. Default profile still busted; testing profile still works. Let me know if you or the devs come up with anything. If not, I'll start from scratch with a new FF profile. A minor bummer I'm hoping to avoid, so I will wait to hear from you—but not 1P's fault, I'm convinced. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the update. I don't have anything further to report right now, but if it happens again in the new profile, please send us a fresh Diagnostics Report as soon as possible after you begin having the problem. That could shed some light on the situation.

If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

We are always here to help!
  • Sorry for the non-update here, but for anybody who may stumble upon this and wonder what happened, I ended up switching to Chrome shortly after this conversation ended. It seems clear enough that a corrupt FF profile was the issue, though, as when I started the process of creating a new profile the 1P extension worked just fine.
