Inconsistent Identity Filling in FF/IE Extension

Hi Agile,

I was pleasantly surprised recently to see that the 1P Firefox extension had finally been updated to include identity filling. However, I've tried this feature on several different websites and get mixed results. Some fields fill, some don't. Some field names match exactly the fields in 1P as identity, so it can't be that the field names differ. Has anyone else reported issues? It just seems like it's 50% working right now. Good to have, but, ummm, yeah, not exactly working as expected.

Regards,

Curbed

    Hey there, Curbed!

This is our experience as well. While we are constantly working to improve this, the internet grows faster than we can make changes! In cases where standard (or semi-standard) IDs are used it works great, but otherwise 1Password has to attempt to make a "best guess" to fill in the gaps. Honestly considering what we are up against I am surprised it works as well as it does sometimes. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

If there are specific sites you are having trouble with, by all means let us know! Each one we get working may help any number of additional sites, and everything we learn helps us make our algorithms "smarter".

At this point, you may find it helpful to know that we have made a lot of progress in our new engine, which is currently being used in our Chrome and Safari 5.1 extensions; and eventually this will be implemented in Firefox as well, so help is on the way!

If you have anything to add, just let us know. We're listening! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

P.S: I also wanted to add that in The Future with a (more or less) unified codebase for our browser extensions it will be much easier to update them more often so that everyone can more easily benefit from these kinds of improvements.

Thanks for the speedy answer brenty. Well, glad it isn't just me having problems then, and that you're working on it. The only thing I would add here is when you talk about how the web changes so fast and you're surprised it works as well as it does, etc. I was wondering ... do you ever try to investigate how competitors do things? I'm not suggesting reverse engineering or anything sneaky, just wondered if that was a factor in how features were developed? I've used Roboform and LastPass extensively, so I often (rightly or wrongly) compare performance/features against all 3 products (RF, 1P, LP). LP/RF form-filling is really rock solid, so as a techie, was just curious how they implement it to get it so good.

    Of course, I prefer much 1P <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />
  • It's perfectly valid to compare 1Password against the other tools out there, CE!

I came to 1Password from Roboform, myself, about three years ago, when I shifted from Windows back to the Mac, and I used to get really frustrated with the shortcomings in form-filling.

First, things are constantly improving, even before the current push that Brent mentioned.

Second, Roboform in particular has several years' head start on us...it may be that they've been improving on their field-recognition "intelligence" at about the same rate, and are just further along.

Thanks so much for your confidence in us, CE, and for your patience. Our customers are awesome!

    Hi David,

Yes, true Roboform has a huge head start and they began with form-filling as their core feature, hence the 'Form' in Robo! But as you may've been aware, RF really screwed up and reneged on some of their customers regarding licensing, not to mention their service and product has gone downhill the last couple of years.

LP do a great job of Form-filling, and they're relatively new on the scene.

But 1P's strength is not only the app but the people behind it, and their commitment to customers and willingness to hear us <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Looking forward to the ongoing updates!

    Regards,

Wow. Thanks so much for the kind words, Curbed!

We certainly do our best, but we are only here because of you and the rest of our awesome customers. Because of you, we can make a living doing what we love, and I only hope that our gratitude is evident.

With regards to form filling, I think that you make a good point about our focus. I think that, first and foremost, 1Password is about security; our browser support and form filling, while important, are really an extension (har har) of this: We want people to not only have long, strong, unique passwords for better security, we want to make it convenient to use them. Otherwise, who would bother? I don't know about you, but back in the day I used the same crappy password for everything. Why? Because it was convenient. 1Password makes it even more convenient for me to be less [s]stupid[/s] insecure! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

To this end, we are constantly working to ensure that we support the latest browsers and operating systems (again, so that our customers can benefit from the latest security fixes and safety features). We aren't resting on our laurels. Have you tried our Chrome extension? I would love to hear your take on the Identity filling there. We always appreciate the feedback! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Can you provide me with an URL or two? I would love to reproduce and fix this.

Sure. Below is the URL I was trying to fill today, and it only filled name and email, I believe, skipping other fields like phone and date of birth which I have entered into my 1P identity. I have had other instances where it's basically been the same, filling in 50/50 of the fields, but I can't recall right now where they were or what I was filling <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Here's today's URL where I had the issue:

The next time I run into the issue, I'll fire up Chrome and try it in there to see if there's a difference. That'll be an interesting test. I mostly use FF at the moment, but I'd like to switch to Chrome someday soon...perhaps when I get my new Mac <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    No way! That's my job! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

I tested the site in your previous post and...well, it was sightly improved in Chrome. The phone number filled where it didn't in IE9 and FF5 (which use the same filling engine). It is hard to say if it would have selected the appropriate options from the dropdown menus, as my address is not Australian.

I did, however, try this on the Windows Live signup page. In FF5 and IE9, my mailing address was filled into the the "Use your email address" field (doh!), but in Chrome (I am using 1Password 2.0.7.beta-207, which has an updated Chrome extension) it filled everything but the "Birth year" field perfectly (leaving the password and CAPTCHA fields empty, of course). I was impressed. I just chose that site randomly by doing a Google search for "sign up".

    And the best is yet to come. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I had the same result - Chrome was slightly better, and it filled the phone number but didn't fill date of birth. I wouldn't really expect State/Region to be filled as they are drop downs, but would like to think date of birth should be. The date of birth field though has a pre-populated format in it, so that's probably why it's not being filled.

This was my thought as well. Date filling seems to be particularly problematic, since there are so many different formats: MM/DD/YY; MM/DD/YYYY; Date Month, Year; DD/MM/YYYY; Month Day; etc. But we are not giving up. Our awesome devs may yet have some tricks up their sleeve. With some luck and hard work, we may yet be able to improve this. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
