phone number format in identity

In my identity, the phone number format seems to be stored as xxx-xxx-xxxx. When I use IP to fill in my identity on a website, it fills it in as (xxx) xxx-xxxx. Sometimes that's exactly what the website wants. Sometimes the website wants xxx-xxx-xxxx. Is 1P trying to be "smart" about this (and being "dumb" sometimes in the process), or is there a way to tell 1P what the default phone format I want to have it use. It seems to me that most web forms prefer xxx-xxx-xxxx.

    Hey there, camner!

Actually, many web forms specify the format in the code. This helps in many cases, but otherwise 1Password has to guess. And in some instances, web developers just copy and paste code with field metadata that doesn't quite match what the form itself is expecting. Is there a specific site that you can give us as an example? If you let me know your OS, browser, and 1Password versions, I would be happy to test this myself to see if we can do anything to improve it.

    Please let me know. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

1Password simply fills in the data you have stored in the Identity. For example, I have one Identity in which I used the (###) ###-#### format and another in which I used the ###-###-#### format. 1Password dutifully fills exactly what I stored for each Identity.

That said, some websites reformat the data on the fly, so perhaps the best format to use in the phone number fields in Identities may be ########## which will not insert any characters besides the numbers. This will allow the website to format the number as it sees fit. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />

I hope that helps. Please let me know.

    Cheers!

Thanks both for your replies. I'm going to have to watch this carefully. In the identity I'm talking about, the data is stored as "xxx xxx xxxx" (with embedded spaces, without quotes). And yet I'd swear that I get errors on some web sites because the phone number is "formatted incorrectly." Doesn't quite seem likely, does it? I'll keep a careful eye on this and see what I notice and report back. Using the identity is not an everyday occurrence, of course (only when I'm signing up at a website I haven't signed up for before), so it may take some time.

You can always experiment on a site without actually submitting the form. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

I'd love to hear any updates you have whenever they may be.
