"Move" to Dropbox

Good day!

New user, trying out the trial version to see if it's the application I want to keep tabs on my passwords. Definitely liking it so far!

You recommend Dropbox as a way to sync the password file between computers. While I understand that the keychain is encrypted, and thus is safe to store in the cloud, I'm more concerned about Dropbox's ability to irrevocably delete my keychain. If I delete a file on one computer, it's deleted from all of them (Dropbox's recovery functionality notwithstanding). Or what if Dropbox goes down, even just temporarily?

When I choose "Move" to Dropbox in the options, is that "Make a copy in my Dropbox folder that gets updated but I can still somehow access in the event Dropbox dies?". Or am I at the whim of the cloud?

    Greetings, Commander! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

That is a great question. You would not BELIEVE the crazy things I do to my 1Password data in the name of testing. Earlier today I did some "experiments" and, sure enough, when I tried to use 1Password on my other system Dropbox had done it's thing and sync'd the bad data. Good Dropbox; bad brenty. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

Fortunately, 1Password makes backups of your data automatically. You can change the location under Preferences > Backup (say, an external backup drive?), and at any time you can go to File > Restore Data File from Backup... if something goes wrong. This is exactly what I ended up having to do earlier tonight.

To answer your last question, your Dropbox folder is completely localized to your machine. Each Dropbox folder is essentially a mirror, to (and from) which Dropbox sync's data. If your internet connection goes down (or the Dropbox server is having trouble connecting to you), your data is still stored locally -- it just will not be able to sync for the duration.

I hope this helps. If you have any other questions at all, just ask! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

We also recommend having a holistic backup solution in place as part of your regular computing hygiene. This is good for not only your 1Password data, but also the rest of your digital life. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
