Is Java needed for the new Safari 5.1 extension?

Lion does not ship with Java. Once I installed Java, problems with 1PW disappeared.

To install Java, start the Java Console in Utilities folder and it will prompt you to install.

Weird. I have only heard this in one other case. Please see this thread on the beta forum. The new 1Password Safari 5.1 extension does not use Java, and given that Lion does not ship with it for anyone, I suspect that others would have reported this as well were it necessary...

    Welcome to the forums, Bopperick!

It would be extremely helpful to know what kind of issue(s) you had with 1Password before installing Java, and what component it was that suggested Java be installed. Were you trying to use the 1Password browser extensions at the time (which browser), or while running the main 1Password application? Anything you can remember and share with us could help to better understand what happened in this case.

    Thanks!

For what it's worth, I have not installed Java in Lion and the Safari 5.1 extension works quite well for me.

It sounds like you have not conflated Java and JavaScript (which are two completely different technologies), but I want to make it clear to others coming across this thread that JavaScript is definitely required to use the new Safari 5.1 extension. As far as I know, Java is not required (since I am using the extension without it installed on my own system).

Please do let us know if you can provide more details on your situation, though. I am intrigued.
