Time Machine Backup Question

Hello all. I recently bought Knox and I'm planning to make it a significant part of my incredibly OCD backup procedures. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Part of my plan involves using a dedicated Time Machine drive. I've read in other posts how using Time Machine can cause issues with Knox. The issues seem to involve a Vault or Vaults being open while Time Machine begins its backup.

However, when I use my Time Machine drive, I make sure all applications have been closed and all other volumes disconnected. I also don't keep the drive connected all the time. I run it once a week.

If I don't have any Vaults open, should I run into issues using Time Machine? I know it's best to err on the side of caution and tell people just not to use Time Machine with Knox, but I'm curious if my specific backup routine would cause any issues.

Thanks!

  • Hey there, SmokinHalfNote! Welcome to the forums. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

You are correct that that is our recommendation. Ultimately, though, it is your data and you can do whatever you like with it! We just don't want to be responsible for people losing their valuable data. Ever. I know how I have felt when I have lost things in the past.

If you are comfortable with managing your backups, you are free to do so. In most cases, Time Machine is set up to run automatically in the background, which, when this happens and the vaults are in use, bad things happen.

Personally, I still wouldn't risk it. I use the Knox backup option because it won't back up any vaults unless they are closed and unmounted properly. One thing you can do is exclude the vaults from Time Machine, but then have Knox just automatically (or manually) back them up to your Time Machine backup drive.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

  • Brent,

First of all, thanks for the reply!

Okay, you terrified me enough to do things differently. It was pretty easy to exclude my Knox folder in Time Machine and add my Time Machine drive to Knox as a backup, so no worries. For some reason, I thought one's Time Machine drive needed to be 100% used for that. Not true, apparently. So, I use the same drive for Time Machine and dedicated Knox backups, per your suggestion.

By the way, you should Paypal the folks at Dropbox a tip. Due to their recent open window (four hours, I think it was), I realized I had a lot of sensitive info "in the cloud." It's still in the cloud, just highly encrypted thanks to Knox. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

FYI, I did read all of the posts and warnings about Dropbox, so I store only backups there, not the actual vaults.

Thanks for following up on this! It sounds like you have everything set up just right. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

While there may have been a silver living to the Dropbox bug, it was nothing compared to the darkness of the cloud that day,

I am just glad all the users of Knox and 1Password have encrypted data stored there.

If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.
