Feature Request: Unprotected Passwords

Hi - This is the one enhancement I've been hoping for ever since I got 1password.

The majority of the passwords I use are for subscription publications or other types of sites that I really don't care if someone was able to get into on my computer. I would like an option to designate that certain passwords are unprotected -- that typing cmd-\ will just automatically fill in the password without my being prompted for my 1p master password.

The "low security" setting seems like a step in this direction, but I want NO security.

I came from the PC/Roboform world and this is the one thing that I desperately miss.

Thanks.

    Welcome to the forums, pierceinverarity!

I will pass your request along to the developers. In the meantime, consider adjusting your security settings to ensure that you are only prompted for your paster password when you want to be. For example, something like this will only lock when you close the lid on your Mac laptop (or otherwise put it to sleep). The rest of the time, you have full access to 1Password after only entering your master password once after waking.

If you need to step away from your computer, simply close the lid or manually lock 1Password.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with.

    Cheers,
  • Hi Khad - Thanks for the reply!

You are right, that would be a pretty decent workaround. It's not quite the same, as it would be nice to have iron-clad security on those few passwords I actually want to lock, and no security on read-only sites... but it is a nice fix in the meantime.

However, I have tried that approach and it doesn't seem to work as advertised. I configured the settings in the "auto-lock" section just as you have displayed them above, put my computer to sleep, and woke it a couple minutes later. While the 1P application had re-locked itself, the Safari plugin did not -- I just had to type cmd-\ and my password was entered without my being prompted for the master password.

I assumed that this was the intended behavior for some reason, but reading your post it looks like it's not... any idea why this is happening?

    Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the update Rich. I'm glad the work around is helpful. I've played with the idea of Security Levels and while I like the idea, it does add a certain level of complexity so I'm not sure it's worth the cost. We're still playing with it, however, and might very well change our minds and implement exactly what you suggest <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Could you please upgrade to the latest 1Password Beta (both the standalone application and Safari extension) and see if that resolves the issue? There were some edge cases in the previous release that should be resolved now.

To enable betas, open 1Password > Preferences > Updates, enable Betas, and then press Check Now. After upgrading, be sure the Safari extension is at the latest version by following these instructions:

    http://help.agilebits.com/1Password3/safari_5.1_install_update.html

Lastly, just to be on the safe side, after Safari upgrades the extension, do a clean restart of Safari by using the CMD+Option+\ keyboard shortcut. You will lose all your open windows and tabs, but in the process the Extension cache files will be cleaned as well.

Please let us know how it turns out.
  • Dave, this works perfectly with the new beta -- thanks very much for the guidance.

It's great to know that this feature is under consideration. In the meantime, now that you've helped me get it working, this workaround helps a lot.

    Thanks!
