"Problem with database" — [Fixed by deleting ~/Library/Safari/Databases/Databases.db]

edited July 2011 in Mac
So I was one who had problems with the new Safari plug-in, so I was hopeful that the recent updates to the application and plug-in would fix the problem. Yes and no. The plug-in does now bring up a login window that I can interact with, but now when I enter my password it tells me "Problem with database, Extension database not available" and tells me to use the Command-Option-Q fix. I have done that repeatedly, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the plugin, rebuilding the database, fixing the permissions, restarting Safari, restarting the app, restarting the computer, all to no avail. It keeps giving me the same error. Is there some other solution I haven't come up with yet? I have attached a diagnostics report, if that helps.

Thanks!

Tony

Welcome to the forums, Tony! I'm sorry that you are having this problem.

I pulled your Diagnostics Report for safekeeping since we recommend not posting them publicly (in these forums or elsewhere), but thank you for providing it to us at AgileBits. I have it on file here in case we need to delve into it.

Let's make sure you're all set up with the latest version of 1Password and our new extension, which supports Safari 5.1 on Lion and Snow Leopard. If you just upgraded to Lion or Safari 5.1 on Snow Leopard, please follow these steps:

    - Update 1Password: Quit Safari, open 1Password, and go to 1Password > Check for Updates to make sure you're running the latest version

    - If there is an update waiting for you, perform the update, and once 1Password restarts, enter your Master Password to unlock it.

    - 1Password should then prompt you to install our updated extension that supports Safari 5.1. This will automatically start Safari to begin the installation.

If you're already running the latest version of 1Password but the 1P button in Safari is not working, let's try a clean re-install of the extension:

    - In Safari, go to Safari > Preferences > Extensions, then click 1Password in the left sidebar there. Click the uninstall button, and quit Safari.

    - Now in 1Password, go to 1Password > Preferences > Browsers, and click the "Install Safari Extension" button.

    - This should automatically start Safari to begin the installation.

When the installation is done, you will have a new, redesigned extension that gives you more and faster access to more of you data right in the browser. We're still working on reimplementing all of the features from the previous extension. The new extension means that it is now an official Safari extension, will automatically update to new versions, and is compatible with new technologies and rules that Apple introduced in Lion and Safari 5.1. Check out this document for a quick intro to the new extension:

    http://help.agilebits.com/1Password3/safari_5.1_intro.html

And take a look at the top right section of our 1Password FAQs page for answers to common questions and troubleshooting guides:

    http://help.agilebits.com/1Password3/faqs.html

I hope that helps. Please let me know.

    Thanks!
  • In case anyone else comes across the "Problem with database, Extension database not available" error, the steps to resolve above didn't work for me.

But it's now working after manually removing the ~/Library/Safari/Databases/Databases.db file and reinstalling the extension.

Thank you very much for the update. It is great to know there is a solution!
  • I'm still having issues even after following all steps outlined below from earlier admin post. I also manually deleted the library file. See attached screen shot for latest problem.

Welcome to the forums, malonefoto! I'm sorry that you are having this problem. Please be sure you open and unlock the main 1Password application before attempting to use the new extension.

Could you please try the new Beta release (3.7.1.BETA-2) and see if it fixes this problem? You can do this by going to the 1Password > Preferences window, selecting the Update panel, enable the "Include Beta versions" checkbox, and then click Check Now. Once the update is installed, try again and see if it helps.

If you are still having trouble, please uninstall the extension from Safari, and then reinstall it carefully following each step listed in the User Guide. Each step is important, especially if you are having trouble getting it installed initially.

Please let me know how it turns out.

Great, thanks Jye, that was the solution that finally worked for me! Updating and reinstalling did nothing.

Khad, thanks for your response. Followed the steps as outlined and now I'm getting a request to unlock the app which I've done multiple times. Running 1Password Version 3.7.1 (build 31089) and Safari extension 3.7.b9. I've been using

1Password on my mac for quite some time but this is a fresh install on my wife's MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7. Your prompt help is appreciated.

If you have already tried these latest versions with no success, and then deleted the .db file as outlined earlier in the thread, you might be seeing something different. Please follow the steps on this web page to generate and email a Diagnostics Report for us (support@agilebits.com) to look over. Be sure to mention a link to this thread so that we can connect the dots. Thanks!

    Marty,

Deleting the db file didn't work. I went ahead and sent the Diagnostics Report to support. I'm hoping it won't take 7 days for a response as stated on the support page.

Thanks! I've got your report (and no, it didn't take 7 days either).

In your case you're seeing this error in the browser because you have nothing stored in 1Password. Apparently in this case we don't setup something that's needed in the extension's database that's needed to complete your unlocking from the browser. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

Since this seems to be a catch-22 (you can't use the browser to automatically save a Logins item without unlocking, but you can't unlock without an item), please use the 1Password application to add a "dummy" Logins item. Within a few seconds that should sync with the Safari extension and perhaps then you'll be able to use 1Password properly.

Please let me know how it turns out! We'll wait to hear from you here in the forums.

    Marty,

Creating the dummy account did the trick. Thanks for your help!
